Re: whos truck is this i gotta ask?
The swap is not that hard I have done it on 8 trucks now. It is very time consuming though. After doing a 6" IFS lift on my buddy's 2500HD I will not do another lift unless it is a Solid Axle Swap.

Re: whos truck is this i gotta ask?
If you get a 3500 HD in those body styles, they already have a solid front axle, but they are only 2wd. The swap is even easier, the leaves and mounts are all there.

Re: whos truck is this i gotta ask?
I have done a swap like this to a 1/2ton 2wd and that was pritty easy. But how hard would it be to do it to a 3500 4x4 a 96.

Re: whos truck is this i gotta ask?
Easy as long as you get the right parts and know from the start how you want it.
Do you want to use the factory transfer case? If so you need a ford of new dodge front axle. If you want to go all GM then you will need a transfer case along with a Chevy front axle. The transfer case needed is from a 90-91 burb/crew cab with a TH400, 4L80E, or a SM465. If you don't mind loosing OD then you could use a tranny/t-case from a 73-87.

Re: whos truck is this i gotta ask?
The axles are easy to find around here. Between my friends and I there are probably 7 front axles kicking around behind my barn. Craigslist is your friend along with other true 4x4 guys. I don't know any 4x4 guys that don't have at least 1 extra set of axles laying around.

Re: whos truck is this i gotta ask?
Front axles are all over the place and cheap. If you want a Dana 60 for an ultimate truck, that's different. But,if you don't really need all a Dana 60 offers, you'd still be miles ahead and way tougher than original using a 3/4t axle on an 8-lug or a 1/2t axle on a 1/2t. You can always toss a Dana 60 in later if you really think you need it.
Trucks like the one this thread was started over were sold new through upfitters. I remember back around 2000 seeing them for sale built from HD3500s with 19.5 wheels.
