Re: How about some fleetside pics
Black Lake in the Seven Devils. It's on the east side of Hell's Canyon. It is an old mine site. It is called Black Lake because it is so deep when you look down the water is black. The mine was up high (still there but closed). You can see the mine tailings across the lake. A cable car ran across the lake carrying ore to a stamping mill. Legend is that there is a lot of ore that fell out of the buckets but it is not recoverable because of the depth and I think its probably illegal to try. The ore was crushed and then taken by mule wagons to a smelter. Road going in is ok except for the last 15 miles that take about a hour to navigate. There is one stretch called High Dive. It goes across an old shale slide. Its called High Dive because you are looking almost straight down a couple of thousand feet to the Snake River. It was one of the places that convinced me I needed 4wd. The first time we went up the truck was still 2wd with the camper on. Going across the back wheels started slipping sideways, I had Joan and the kids get out and walk across. Made it ok but decided to move up the conversion schedule so I could have the front pulling in those situations. Its not a bad road but you can't get up the last bit in a car without tearing up the bottom. The campground is the southern access point for trails (hiking and horses only) that head north in to the wilderness. It's real popular because you gain so much altitude that the hikes are not bad. Fishing is terrible in the Lake but in 2-3 hours you can get into some nice high mountain lakes that have fish. Elk are near and deer come into camp all the time. Here is a map it is just north of "New Meadows" on the map.
