Thinking of buying a used Speedaire compressor

I'm looking into buying a used Speedaire 5hp 2stage compressor. Just wondering if anyone has any input. It's a horizontal cast iron side by side cylinder type. The model # is a 5Z400. I think its a 80 gallon tank. I can get it for $300, maybe a little less but I'll have to change the motor to single phase. Thanks Chuck

Wow Chuck! After looking around at used ones, the price is very good.
I don't know much about them except they hold their value and replacement pumps can be had.

Any more info on this?

300 sounds like a screaming great deal. Go in knowing you need a motor the same frame size and rpm as the one you are replacing. You will also likely need an electric motor starter. If the motor amperage exceeds the pressure switches capacity then a motor starter is needed. Think of it as a big relay. If you do end up needing a starter shop the internet. Local electrical supply shops are usually crazy high on them.

Re: Thinking of buying a used Speedaire compressor

Thanks for the input guys. Im going to check on motors today from one of my wholesalers. I usually can do pretty decent on prices with them. I am a hvac tech, so I can get that kinda of stuff at contractors cost. I am going to pick the compressor up this week. It will be real nice to finally have enough cfm's to do the job.

Knowing you are a Hvac tech, I now apologize, for the comment about the starter and motor sizing. I just posted that as many people aren't familular with this stuff. Also, just to think of re purposing stuff, those cork and rubber isolators that go under condensers, are great under compressor feet too. You may also want to change the tank drain if it has a radiator type pet cock. This is my favorite for the money http://www.amazon.com/PARTSMART-SMR14268-Universal... http://www.amazon.com/PARTSMART-SMR14268-Universal...

No need to apologize, all good info. I may even go sofar as putting a auto tank drain used on hvac pneumatic control compressors.

If you are thinking about an electric drain valve. How about a 110v coil in your starter too, for control voltage. Use that 110v to your drain valve, as well. Doing so, you can control the whole thing with a simple light switch.

Re: Thinking of buying a used Speedaire compressor

Holy Crap!! Ive been pricing motors. Cheapest sofar is about $425 at one of my wholesalers. 5hp 208/230 single phase, 184T frame 1725rpm. Ive been shoping around on C.L. but everythings pretty far away. I know I can get a phase inverter, but you need to reduce the sheave by 20% and then you loose CFM's. But I knew going into this I'd have to put $$ into a motor.
