Compressor Options
I have a 33Gal 3hp (IIRC) oilless craftsman unit now, but it won't quite keep up with my tools. I am looking at the ~$400 30 Gallon oiled units from husky or IR with a bit more power to replace it with since I am not wired for 220v in the garage.
I am wondering are there better options out there, or can I get a small compressor and daisy chain two together to keep up with the air tools (Air file/sander, DA sander, cutoff wheel, and eventually HVLP gun when I shoot the paint).

Re: Compressor Options
I'm FAR from an expert, but the first option that springs to mind. Get 220v to the garage. This will open all kinds of options up. (Compressor, welder, more 110v if needed.)
I'd be worried about you piggybacking small compressors together, still not being happy, and overloading your 110 circuit. (not to mention the $ put out to get the 110v stuff) My 60gal (3hp,9-10 cfm iirc) is a 220v, there are times when I would like more, but, being able to move it was also a criteria. I did look funny @ Lowes when I grabbed a handtruck to move their compressors before I bought one. lol

Re: Compressor Options
If you have a breaker box in the shop it's easy to wire 220.

My biggest concern was that I wouldn't have enough capacity to spray the truck when I get to that point. No sense having that concern when for another $150 or so I can remove the obstacle.

Re: Compressor Options
If you decide to stick to 110v look for a Campbell Hausfeld VT series. This is an old compressor design from the 50s. It has been revised once that I know of. They stick with it because it works. By far a better option is to bite the bullet get a solid 220v service in the garage and go shopping for a 2 stage machine. A quality air compressor is a lifelong friend for a hobbiest mechanic. Don't cut corners. Expect to spend $1000-$1500 for a quality machine. Remember LIFELONG purchase.

Re: Compressor Options
Whats wrong with one like this?
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1...atalogId=10053 I bought one version down from this with my father years ago and it's been great. Just didn't get to keep it to myself, and every once in a while it would lag when using the DA for long periods of time.

Re: Compressor Options
Nothing if you are sticking with a single stage. Notice the model number is VT------ that is a CH machine painted red with some husky decals. Expect to take some breaks running body tools though. Some people work that way DA 5 minutes, beer, DA 5 minutes, Beer, DA 5 minutes, Cigarette. That's my dad's work cycle.
A 2 stage machine cost's more, but you gain efficiency, cooler air, drier air, and usually a longer life. |

Re: Compressor Options
Ditto, that's the same machine I have (just with the Lowe's label). Lowe's just happened to have the wire, adapters, and a water separator when I got mine. HD didn't have everything I needed.
I've seen the same one at Lowe's, HD, Tractor Supply, Sears, just check the model number. They can all be tagged differently.

Re: Compressor Options
I went through two of those little Sears compressors while building my truck. When I went to paint it that's when everything went wrong. I bought the biggest compressor Harbor Freight had and had to wire the garage for 220. Best thing I ever did. It cost about $700 for the compressor. It has worked fine for a few years now. I painted my truck in my garage. If you look in the paint and body section forum you will see some pictures. Best wishes for you.

Re: Compressor Options
Handfull, Your paint looks great, even better for a first timer. I am planning to shoot my own truck too, also a first timer. Scared of the metallic but that is what I have my heart set on. Compressor is the first step in getting ready for paint.
I'll wire up for 220 and pick up the compressor in a month or so. Leaning towards the 60 Gal husky unit. Should give me everything I need without a huge investment. Thanks all!

Re: Compressor Options
Spraying metallics, pearls etc you need to have a good gun to do so. Can it be done with a cheap gun,yes but your final product will be much smoother with less buffing afterwards with good products. I sprayed a candy paintjob with a starting line gun from Eastwood. It's all about technique and patient and ask questions. You won't learn unless you try...

Re: Compressor Options
Planning to with the new Eastwood gun or devil loss starting line. Haven't gotten too deep into gun research yet but those two seem like solid choices.

Re: Compressor Options
Eastwood also has a gun that Kevin Teets ( trucks)can't remeber his name on here, but he recommends them. They are like $200
