Gas tank Filler locations/options?

I know the re-locating of the gas tank has been beat to death so I wont even bring that up.

BUT I have decided to do just that and am using a brand new re-pop 55 chevy passenger car tank.

I hate the idea of mounting the filler neck/fuel cap in the bed and I think I want to route it out the rear of the drivers side fender (I have a stepper) but am open to ideas.

What do you guys think? Out the rear of the stepside fender or out the side of the fender to the rear of the tire? Or any other suggestions? Pictures would be nice.

Thanks,

Re: Gas tank Filler locations/options?

Im good with the idea. Do you plan to use a stock style of cap sticking out or a later model flush mount door?

I mounted my tank on rear between rails and installed fill on right fender using this (Perko 0520DPGCHR 1-1/2" Hole Chrome Marine Fuel Fill) worked out good and looks nice. Will try to post pics tomorrow

Re: Gas tank Filler locations/options?

I like the idea of the door and I have seen them on the back side of the fender and on the outside of the fender.

Was wondering what style door would work the best and what all parts I needed to grab from the salvage yard when I go to cut one out?

Re: Gas tank Filler locations/options?

What I plan on doing to mine is like the old 50's Bel Airs and mounting the filler behind one of the tail lights. I think I have seen pics of someone else doing it that way on here but don't totally remember.

Thats the idea i'm looking at.

Did the salvage yard let you cut that door out or did you get it someplace else? What other parts did you have to get to make it work?

I have seen a few of those tail light style fuel locations and also under the license plate locations.

Actually like the license plate idea but I hear that the tank can be too slow to fill if located incorrectly.

Re: Gas tank Filler locations/options?

I too would like to know what I can do, I dont get the best traction and I figure any weight in the back is good, no to mention that the tank behind the seats lets out smells, nothing bad, but when others ride in my truck, they can smell it, I guess I am use to it

I would like to mount mine in the far back right under the back of the bed with the cap pointing out to the bottom of the tail gate

It may not be what you like but it sure is easy and works very well. SOme times it is easier to not and re invent the wheel.

Re: Gas tank Filler locations/options?

GMR could you pm or email or post the specs for your tank? I'm ordering a custom one soon and I'd like to compare measurements vs what I've come up with, I havent found alot of info on xframes here and I don't want to screw it up lol.

Thanks

I have an s10 tank so it already had the filler neck, I will extend it a couple inches and mount it to the ranger door but for right now it still works to just stick the filler in the hole. A salvage yard will let you cut it from a junk bed.

you can get those flush caps at marine surplus for about 1/10th of what hotrod and motorcycle shops sell them for. I dont like the idea of a bed floor filler because its a fiddly chore to fill it even with the tailgate down and the wood area around is bound to get dings and splashes. but hey humpty said doowhatchoolyke

Re: Gas tank Filler locations/options?

Well you dont have to use that marine filler cap. Plent others out there that you could use. As for the wood, I am not using spar varnish on mine, It is getting sikkens clear, UV proctection, tough as nails against just about anythig you can spill on it. Heck you could even buff out marks in it ... Not that I would but still the same it can be done.

I know of several that where done this way vs varnish, years later in the AZ sun the clear is still holding like the day it was new, cannot say that about the spar products.

Did you have to cut the marine filler neck down to be able to attach it to the filler neck welded to your tank. I put in a 78 blazer tank in my 65 and the top of the tank touches the bottom of my bed cross sills and the filler neck thats being welded in it by a local shop will be sticking out 1 1/2". From my measurements, there will only be a total 3" of space available from the top of my tank to the top side of my bed wood. I see that the marine filler is 3" long (I don't have it yet) and with my tank spout being an 1 1/2", for a total of 4 1/2", it's too long...(not gonna fit), so I am assuming I should just be able to cut the marine filler off to about 1 1/2" +/- and join the two pieces together with a hose and be done..right? OR did I just screw it all up??? It seems logical, but who knows I just winged it on the install....lol.Should I have done something differently or is this normaly what needs to be done? I really hope this makes sense and that I tagged the picture you posted correctly.

Re: Gas tank Filler locations/options?

Posts # 11 & 22 show how I originally did mine on the inside bed wall, hidden under the stepside fender. It was a great idea, but I goofed on the tight angle at the fuel tank:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...light=gas+tank

Post number 50 shows the current configuration with an aircraft cap. It’s located very close to the left rear corner of the bed for convenience at the gas pump, and for making it easier to access I there’s a bunch of stuff in the bed.

No I did not cut down anything at all. Other than a chunk of hose.
