427 tall deck help

Hey guys need some help or ideas here, im in the process of putting a 427 td in my 83 4x4 swb. most of it is all bolt in minus a few things. I know alot of ppl think it is a stupid swap thats your opinion and your entitled to it it but the thread is not about whether i should or not its about trying to get this thing to work haha. So my two problems are 1 the starter and 2 the hole in the front of the high rise intake.

i had to change my water pump to a 454 water pump because the one the was on it had a 3 inch hose on it because of the big truck rad. I am going to run my in and return lines direct to my rad so im gunna plug the holes on my water pump so i was wondering if anyone knew how to or had any ideas on plugging the hole in the intake?

My second question is if anyone knows what kind of starter this thing will take cause all the ones ive tried had offset bolt holes and this motor has a straight bolt pattern i got one from a 69 corvette 427 but it will only work if i can get a cast iron bell housing. any help at all would be really appreciated trying to get this thing done by good friday so i can run it

I have no advice to offer but that's a cool swap! If the motor is in good condition now it should last you a very long time even if you run it hard.

Re: 427 tall deck help

When I did my 427TD swap I cut off most of the spout on the intake and then I found a freeze plug that fit the hole and drilled it and welded in a nipple for the bypass hose. You could just run the bypass hose from the water pump to the outlet thats behind the thermostat housing. As for the starter my engine was a 1988 so it didn't have the starter mounting holes drilled. I used a pre 72 cast iron bellhousing that let me bolt the starter to the bellhousing not the engine block.

Re: 427 tall deck help

Get the intake spacers to convert to a stock or alum intake from a standard deck big block.

Re: 427 tall deck help

Are you guys sure those are tall decks? I thought I remembered more distance between the top of the water pump and the bottom of the cylinder head than what is showing in these pics....

Those holes in the water pump are standard pipe thread. Any hardware store will have pipe plugs that will work, get the flush ones like are in your heads they 'll look cleaner.

Re: 427 tall deck help

Keith, those are definitely tall decks. The intake is so distinctive with the nipple sticking off the front, directly above the water pump. I was building a 366 for my truck for a while and it looked identical. The extra .4" in deck height doesn't really seem that noticeable; it looked like any other big block if you disregard the intake.

OK - thanks. I was thinking the additional deck height was a little more obvious.

Re: 427 tall deck help

You can go to a gear reduction starter and get the holes that are straight accross. Also, I had a 1971 c10 with a 402 and it used a cast iron housing starter that had both the offset and straight pattern. Another, more difficult choice would be to make a pattern from a block with offset holes and drill and tap it. Cast iron is soft and easy to drill and tap.

Here is a link for a gear reduction starter, cheapest I found., but these are every where, check craigslist or ebay.

Re: 427 tall deck help

You can build one of those blocks up!! Can you say 496!!
The truck tall deck motors are strong at low RPMs. C30+ trucks used them for hauling cargo. Car and truck motors are different. The difference is deck height, intake, distributor, and the tall decks came with 4 ring pistons. Heads, crank, cam, rods, etc etc will interchange. The intake will not interchange.

496 recipe: If the height of the tall deck is no concern , add a 4.25 stroke crank, 6.385 rods, the "regular" 454 pistons of your choice, and cut about .050 off the deck. Simple, cheap and easy 496.

Re: 427 tall deck help

You need the lower bracket in the picture. It's the same one on my 427 T.D.This is on a 454 I have. It's the standard mount for a big block with short water pump and factory exhaust manifolds. The top bracket shown will not work with the t.d. intake.

The top bracket used on the T.D. is huge!I'll try to find a picture of it.
Mike.

Re: 427 tall deck help

im also wondering if should change the fan for an aluminum one because the truck one weighs a ton, or should i run electric fans? my only worry about the fans is that im building this truck to play in the woods as well and on the road is the mud going to affect the electric fan if i do go that route?
