Re: Help a guy out.

I had straight pipe on my 86 GMC back in the 90's. I had just dropped a 350hp GM crate motor (aluminum heads etc) with a nice set of headers. It sounded very sweet at low RPM and sounded like a beast at wide open throttle, very manly. But, after just a few weeks I finally ordered some flowmasters and put them on. What got me to do it was the cold morning start ups with a medium rev going on while it warmed up.

You'll have to put it back on when you get it inspected, won't you?

Geez, have you been talking to my son? He insists on running straight pipe on his S-10 and I think it sound terrible. You can't cruise on the highway because everything from the mirror to the sliding back glass rattles.

Put a muffler back on it. Your hearing will thank you!

BTW do you ever go to the cruise in at Pilot Mountain?

Re: Help a guy out.

If you want to loose power, go ahead and install flowmasters. They are nothing but sound making mufflers. If you want sound (actually above 2000 RPMs) and straight pipe power, use magnaflows.

Re: Help a guy out.

glasspacks will give you a better exhaust tone. I hated my straights they droned in the cab at cruising speed. I'm afraid your moms right, also back pressure can be a good thing.

Re: Help a guy out.

hay man i live in n.c to and you will still have to put them on when you get it inspected. if you still want it to be loud get a set of flow master 10s. they will still give you the sound and you wont have to worrie about the cops.

Re: Help a guy out.

cutout would be a good compromise. And you can flip a switch and set of all the car alarms at walmart.

Re: Help a guy out.

Assuming by your user name that you're running an inline 6 cylinder, no one will be impressed by the sound with no muffler. I ran a split exhaust (duals) on a Chevy 6 with Thrush glass pack mufflers, the truck sounded like a Honda.

Install a stock muffler or a turbo muffler and behave yourself. LOL. Save your reputation. LOL!

I didn't notice it was a straight 6. they do sound odd without a muffler. kinda like a lawnmower and a loud honda had a baby

Re: Help a guy out.

if you really like the straight pipes, then get two used glasspacks or buy those cheap cherry bomb ones, and simply take the fiberglass out and weld a pipe through it. if someone looks and sees that there are mufflers there how do they know theres a pipe welded through.

just watch out for how loud it is. thats not saying you still might get pulled over for sound.
