Saved a 4x4 from the crusher. (for now)

Talked to a guy who knew a guy who had an old gmc he was going to scrap. Really in rough shape and not much to save, but had to try anyhow. I will look it over better in the daylight tomorrow and post more pics. Don't know a thing about it except the engine turns by hand and it rolls fine.
Oh yeah, these heads were laying on the seat. Hope they are good! (notice a small x after the #)
More pics to follow tomorrow. (hard to get good pics in the dark) Seems like alot of people are finding trucks all of a sudden and posting up. Figured i would join.

Thumbs up Re: Saved a 4x4 from the crusher. (for now)

It reminds me of the $50 dollar truck I once bought without even seeing it. I now drive it everyday!!!

Hope you can save this one too!

I see it had 16" wheels. What year is it/ My mind goes straight to the transmission/transfer case/axles on a truck in this condition. Motor, too, and under hood stuff, dash, misc hardware.

Eric, no matter how rough they are, they all have some good parts, especially a 4x4. Nice find.

Re: Saved a 4x4 from the crusher. (for now)

Found the owners manual and plate from 5-72. I got it to crank over good this morning and it was showing oil pressure, but can't get it to fire. I will look into it more later.
Bobs409, this will probably end up as a parts truck i am afraid.
Passthebuck, Thanks
Tim, it is a 72 with 16" aftermarket wheels. Lots of good parts yet. 350/3 speed.
Frenchblue72, i hope the daylight pics don't scare me too since it is already in my yard!!
Chevytrucklover, the X means bigger intake runners from the factory. Looks like 1:94x 1:60 valves in these heads. These are a good score if they are good.
Duncan and son, you are correct about always having parts of some kind. The owner didn't really want me to come look because he said it would be a waste of my time.
Randy, no hooks or any "goodies" really. I don't always fall into the good ones!!!

Re: Saved a 4x4 from the crusher. (for now)

You know someone out there is loosing sleep at night looking for a 72 cab/vin, tittle, frame, protec-o-plate for a 72 4x4. I wonder if the #'s on the engine match the protec-o-plate?

Haven't run any engine numbers yet. No title on this one and worse yet, no plates. No way to tell how long since it was on the road. I am guessing it has been a plow truck along time. No titles are a pain in MN usually. The guy i got it from didn't have a title either. He wanted the plow blade. Not worth persuing IMO.

Great save! Lots of good parts on it yet. If you want to get rid of the plow lift-mount-pump stuff let me know I may be interested.

The 487 head is a good performance head and the X ment it had better air intake flow.

That is actually another power steering pump driven off the alt that goes to a reservoir to run the plow. I told my buddy when i opened the hood it had the rare, dual power steering setup but he didn't buy it...

Remember your post about the different heights in the stock looking air cleaner risers? Can you do me a huge favor and see what is under that air cleaner? If you end up parting, I'd be real interested in that piece.

They are the base plastic panels from 72. 71 and earlier would have been totally flat.
