Engine crane won't lift
If you know the correct way to bleed a hydraulic ram on an engine crane, you can probably skip the rest of my story about how I tried..
![]() I lowered everything to the floor, separated the tranny and proceeded to try to lift the engine back up to put it on a stand, but it wont lift it more than about 3" off the ground. This is a fairly new crane, but it's a "Power fist" brand, so maybe it's a POS. My buddy told me to top up the fluid, so I used brake fluid and filled it with the ram in the raised position. Still didn't work. I then called a different friend who seems to know everything about everything and told me not to fill it with the ram in the raised position as you would overfill the ram. He said to fill it with the ram retracted and to position the ram so the fill hole was the highest point of the ram. The hole is about 3/4 the way up the side of the ram, so I laid the crane on it's back and filled it up. I also tried bleeding it by loosening the control screw enough to let fluid out and tightening and loosening the control screw back and forth which kept letting more bubbles out of the fill hole, so I assumed there was just a bunch of air in there. Still won't lift. I'm assuming brake fluid should work fine instead of hydraulic fluid? Or is it too thin for the seals maybe? It looks a little wet on the base of the little plunger under the handle, maybe loosing pressure here? The only other thing I can think of is that I transported this thing laying down in my truck, maybe it didn't like that? Thanks for any help guys

Re: Engine crane won't lift
I heard all I needed to when you said you put brake fluid in it. It's done.

Re: Engine crane won't lift
Well it may not be done , Just need to drain that mix of fluids out . I have used transmission fluid in my own hoist which is hydraulic oil .
Make sure the jack is as close to upright as possible , Cylinder all the way down . fill it then run the cylinder up and down . it may take several times of that to get it full . always check the level with the cylinder down |

Re: Engine crane won't lift
Brake fluid has damaged all the seals in that cylinder. You should repair or replace it. It will drop on you at the wrong moment for sure
http://www.harborfreight.com/8-ton-l...ack-94562.html is a cheap replacement. |

Re: Engine crane won't lift
Yeah, I drained it and put ATF in it and got it to lift enough to get the motor onto a stand, but it was really slow going up. But the current symptom isn't really different from before I did anything to it.
When I picked it up from my brother, I laid it on it's back in my truck which made the ram face downwards. I drove to work with it in my truck, worked a ten hour shift and didn't unload it till late in the evening. This was probably the initial cause for the loss of pressure. Anybody know if these things are easy to rebuild, or should I just replace the ram? (thanks for the link)

Re: Engine crane won't lift
with the ram fully down open the valve and jack the handle 25 or 30 times. This will help get the air out of the lower section on the ram and pump.

Re: Engine crane won't lift
if u have done that and it has fluid then the jack must be bad.
Run it up again with no load then hang from the end of it, if it lowers when it shouldnt be then ya u got a bad jack. take it apart and see whats wrong with it or just buy a new jack |

Re: Engine crane won't lift
It held the engine in the air for about half an hour without dropping while I messed around with the engine stand.

Just reading your thread. Princess Auto has a slogan that says something like No sale is final until youre satisfied. I would try to bring it back and tell them whats happening. If you have your bill it would help if you want a refund, but if you just want it replaced they are the only ones that sell Powerfist. Thats their brand. Good luck. Gord
