If you're mating a T-5 to a V-6, you'll need to have the automatic adaptor plate, either from the factory or buy one from Bendtsen's transdmission adaptors

Re: new here with T 5 speed /GMC V6 question

Can not seem to join the group at 60-66 gmc guy, the Yahoo stuff has me stumped. Was hoping there was a way to use the bellhousing that came with the truck as it has a 4speed. Has any one created a thread on doing this?

Re: new here with T 5 speed /GMC V6 question

Welderboy:
T-5 swaps have been written up pretty extensively on the inliners.org website. Also, you can do a search here and find some nice write-ups.

T-5 isn't a very strong tranny. Behind a GMC V-6 you will have problems with it self destructing, if you don't take it easy on it.

Basically, you can either cut down the bearing retainer and input shaft on your T-5 or buy an adapter/spacer so that the larger bearing retainer on your T-5 will fit the smaller diameter hole in your bellhousing. The T-5's from S-10's tend to have the best placement of the shifter for trucks. The T5's from Firebirds and Camaro's have the shifter on the back of the tailshaft which would hit the seat in your truck if you are using the bench.

Hope this helps.

Re: new here with T 5 speed /GMC V6 question

Steve, Thanks. Do you have any other ideas? I would like to use the truck for work (not hotrodding) but it really is tached out at about 55 mph. What kind of mileage can i expect from the 305 V6. Thanks

Re: new here with T 5 speed /GMC V6 question

Welderboy:
The V6's aren't known for good gas mileage. They are torquey and have great longevity. The good news is that makes them easily able to handle taller gears. Do you know what rear end ratio you have? You can change ring and pinion to make them taller, increase rear tire diameter or go with an overdrive to slow down RPM's on the highway.

My truck has 3.54 rear end and I went with a 3 speed with overdrive. I think it is a great addition and an easy swap. When the tranny shifts to overdrive, it reduces the RPM's by 30% since the overdrive is .7 to 1. We have a writeup on them currently going at:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=506747

I put some references on there where you can read all about them. Also, the search function on this board will bring you a lot more reading.

See if that is of interest.

Re: new here with T 5 speed /GMC V6 question

Welder,

I have made some mods to my ride in the following manner

changed the oem rearend from stock down to 3.23 MAde a world of diff. not longer hitting 3000prm at 70 mph 2300 at 70.

changed out the single barl. carb to a 500 cfm holley (You may need to change the intake though.)

Check my webshots album for the various chages I've made.
