Gas tank relocation

I have read on here about a few people relocating their gas tanks under the bed how did you go about this? Is there a kit, and where does the filler get located. I would appreciate any insight anyone has on this project.

I'm sure that you will here this more than once, but go to the bottom of the page and do a search for gas tank location, or something similar. There have been many posts in the past, and will be many in the future.

With a more direct answer; yes, there are kits. We have vendors here on the board that sell them (your best bet), and there other vendors that you will be referred to. Basically it is a semi custom tank that fits between the frame rails at the back of the truck where the spare tire normally goes. I am in the process right now, but I have someone making my tank for me rather than purchasing something new. I almost forgot about the Blazer tank option; Try Wes, or Tim Christian, or some of the other vendors. They should pop in here anyways to let you know what they have. That is a real good thing about this board, there are some board members that are vendors, and or rebuilders of these trucks, and they have a vast wealth of knowledge that they share with the rest of us.

70 Longbed thanks for the tip. I appreciate your response. I was hoping the answer to the kit question was yes.

I'm sure that Wes has the blazer kit. I know that there are others, but his name comes to mind first. Early Classic Enterprise has an aluminum tank, as does Brothers, No Limit, and probably several others. Again, I stress the use of the vendors that support this board with all their other input, not just as a vendor. These guys gives us alot of info and will help you out in all the tech stuff, not just sell you a tank and a kit. I think that Tim Christian is on the east cost, in TN if I am not mistaken.

It's alot of screwing around to get a flip down tail light to work just a warning. And you need to notch you bed floor cross sill ALOT unless your truck has a body lift.

Another option is a junk yard and a Burb or better, a Blazer. Get everything even the skid plate.

Thanks for the info. I don't no if I am ready to try the sidemarker relocation yet, but I sure would like the extra space behind my seat.

Most of the pics I've found are on fleetsides.

We've got the tank kit and now are commited to doing the relocation. I assume that the side marker door will work as well on a step-side?

thanks,

Steve

tank relocation

I used a mid '70s suburban tank on my '67 chev 4x4. Had to move the rear cross member back and then spun the tank around 180 degrees so the filler was on the drivers side. Then used a gas tank door assembly off of a mid'70s #@!D pickup on the side of the box. I don't have any digital pics of the tank in the frame but do have a few of the door assembly. Everything fits in the frame nicely. I did buy new tank straps from GM and had to fabricate a piece to bolt them on to but other than that it was fairly simple. I happened to know a good body man with a "jig" all set up for installing the door assembly.

Thats what I would like to do if and when I get some new metal step fenders. I dont have marker lights. Was gonna do it the first time around but my body man at the time sorta quit working on the truck and I had to finish it myself so the door didnt get put into the fender.
