Clutch...What brand & size?

I need to replace the clutch in my '66 with a 327 and saginaw 4 spd. What brand do you recommend? Are Rhinopac clutches any good? Currently, i have a 12" clutch with a 168 tooth flywheel. Should i stay at 12" or drop down to an 11"? I dont drive that aggresively...burn out every once in awhile.

Re: Clutch...What brand & size?

Mine is a 350/Richmond 4 speed and I’m running a 10.5” clutch and it works fine. I wouldn’t go through the expense of changing sizes from one to the other unless there’s a specific need for it. And I wouldn’t recommend any performance clutch unless you’re going to really beat it up. My experience has been they tend to chatter more than a stock plate unless provided abundant rpm at launch.

I’m running a Centerforce 1 and I wouldn’t recommend it either for something driven daily. The centrifugal weights unique to this brand tend to rattle when they’re floating during shifts, which I find very annoying. When mine wears out I plan to buy the best premium stock replacement clutch Napa Auto offers

Re: Clutch...What brand & size?

Ha, I was just looking at NAPA's website. I'm not sure if the previous owner installed a larger clutch than stock. No parts house lists the 12" as a stock clutch on a '66. The flywheel accepts both 11" and 12". I read somewhere on this forum that a 12" is harder on the synchros and harder shifting than an 11".
I'm about the NAPA NCF 1104072 clutch and the NCF 88101 flywheel. BTW, my flywheel needs to be replaced due to cracks.

Re: Clutch...What brand & size?

When I built my new engine I picked up a new "car" flywheel and was planning to do the swap to 11" but the old 12" flywheel was fresh and so was the clutch so I just kept it 12" which is what I thought was stock.

Re: Clutch...What brand & size?

I have used Centerforce clutches before without problems. My '65 C10 I used a Ram "Muscle Car" clutch. I thought it might have a heavy pedal feel but it actually felt softer than what was in the truck before. It holds great though. Would use them again. Picked it up from Summit Racing.
