78 2wd Blazer Build

Well, sold my 84 CCSB in my avatar and picked up this 78 blazer for less than what I sold my truck body for. Blazer was running, 350/350 combo when I bought it, but the engine/tranny are pretty tired. I will be putting my 468 big block in it with the th350 rebuilt to handle it until I rebuild my 4l80e and decide on a fuel injection system for the motor. This will be a slow build because I will be driving it while working on it. Here are a few pics and will post more soon.

Re: 78 2wd Blazer Build

Thanks everyone, I think it is a pretty solid start as well. @Lolife, I had to sell the CCSB because we are still military and will be moving before I could have gotten the truck back to where I could drive it and work on it.

Re: 78 2wd Blazer Build

Well, made a little progress. Pulled the old motor and tranny out to make room for the big block. Also, received my Big Brake kit from CPP and will start installing it this weekend.

I believe the big blocks and small blocks use the same engine mounts in the 73-87 trucks.

Re: 78 2wd Blazer Build

Yes, you can use the same sbc mounts for bbc. I am gonna try it out because I have heard that the sbc mounts make the engine sit higher. If that is the case, I will get some for the bbc and would be glad to let you have the passenger side one. Should know by this weekend, if that isn't too long of a wait for you.

Re: 78 2wd Blazer Build

Classic Parts of America shows this part number for the big block "clam shell" engine mounts:
http://www.classicparts.com/1972-91-...ctinfo/79-024/

And this one for small block mounts:
http://www.classicparts.com/1973-87-...ctinfo/79-022/

The metal frame stands are the same.
LH side:
http://www.classicparts.com/1973-91-...ctinfo/79-067/

I think the RH side has been discontinued from GM.

That's probably why mine is missing- someone needed it for another truck. The search continues!

Re: 78 2wd Blazer Build

I have no idea what that is!! This is my first blazer, but never saw it on a truck before. Friend of mine that is into blazers didn't know either. Nothing in the literature I have either. I am sure someone on here will know though.

Picking up my trans today!!! Hope to have the blazer rolling under its own power by this weekend!! Still have to install the CPP brakes and may go ahead and do the rear flip as well. Will post pics soon as I can.

Re: 78 2wd Blazer Build

I'm pretty sure it's a bracket to help hold the rear of the hood in place in case of an accident.

Re: 78 2wd Blazer Build

Well, finally made a little progress on the blazer. Told you it would be slow. Got the engine and tranny installed and now doing the little things to get it fired up this weekend. New driveshaft, throttle cable, kickdown cable, etc. Found out my control arms are on the way, so will take pics of the front suspension/brakes after I install them.

CircusWagonJim, I did wind up using both motor mounts. Sorry it took so long to get back to you about them.

More pics to follow.

Re: 78 2wd Blazer Build

Okay, finally got the blazer rolling under its own power. Brakes installed also. It is currently at the muffler shop having the exhaust done. After I get it back, will take some pics and install the tubular control arms and the flip kit. Can't wait to try it out with the big block!!

If your talking about that rod thing sticking up then its for incase you wreck. It keeps your hood from coming through your windshield if you smash the front

Re: 78 2wd Blazer Build

Alright, have some more updates. Brakes installed, flip kit done and need to find some 92-94 4x4 blazer springs, exhaust done but going to have to have it redone because I don't like the way it is run under the trans crossmember. Went with Sanderson headers and flowmaster 44 mufflers, sounds pretty good. Here is a pic of how it sits now. Haven't installed the control arms yet or the 2 inch drop springs. This pic is flip kit and 2.5 inch drop spindle with 1/2 coil cut off stock springs.

Re: 78 2wd Blazer Build

Made2drag,

Haven't been able to work on it much lately. Moved from San Antonio to Colorado Springs, and still trying to get things in order. Have ordered a lot of stuff for it though, Vintage Air Gen IV Surefit, AAW wiring harness, GM Serpentine belt setup, and just ordered No Limit Fat Bar with coilovers. Soon as I have had a chance to do a few things, will post up some updates. Thanks for checking in though.
