emissions? I belive it changed the timming under certain driving conditions

It's an emission part, It went inline in the vacuum line to the distributer, I believe it retarded the timing to keep the engine from dieseling when shutting it off.

Thanks guys, It was hooked up with my old carb, vacuum lines and all. The new carb vacuum lines I ran direct to the distrubutor and pcv valve, then plugged all others. Now I just have to find where the wires come from so I can eleminate them.

People that like to guess should tell you they are guessing. It is a selenoid that controles the vacume advance on vehicles with transmision controled spark. It would also alow vacume advance if the engine started running too hot.

I believe thats part of the TCS, transmission controlled spark system - a smog control. The vast majority of these I've seen referred to on the board were disconnected at some point in the distant past, including mine.

Those wires should run to a TCS relay under the dash by the fuse block.
