homemade intake for inline 6

has anyone ever made a homemade intake manifold of anykind i am toying with the idea of making either a dual carb or 4bbl intake for my 250 inline prob do it for way cheaper than you can buy one. so any tips or pics would be appreciated.

My dad did , oh in 1958 or so , he capped the middle carb port and my grandfather brazed 2 one barrel mounts on either side of the center one... then he added another exit to the manifold....

I am thinking simple like a tube with capped ends and 2 carbs on top with with tube runners going down to the engine head. Kinda going for the old school home built back yard hot rod look. also thought about putting some sort of velocity stacks on the carbs and either just barely sticking them out the hood or put a 68 camaro louver on the hood just above the carbs.

I had a stock 250 intake that somebody welded on a 1/2 plate that was to able to adapt things to a 4412 Holley for circle track use.
I sold it on E-bay and it went somewhere in Texas. Must not have been you that bought it....

I bought an Offenhauser intake off E-bay for around 130 bucks... I did not think I wanted to mess around with a home built thing if I could find an real Offy.
I am storing and hanging on to a Clifford 4 barrel intake if I ever want a build another six .(6=8 ya know)
I am presently using the Offy and a Holley 7448 -350 CFM and having no problems.

Amazing what pictures we have stored on the computer and should clean out. I called this day back in 2010 "Manifold Christmas".
A friend of my father in law was cleaning out his garage and had all these manifolds from the old super six racecar days == They went to the newer V-6 engines in the racecar now, so I was more than happy to help him out!!

I'll never forget that old 1951 chevy pickup with the bottom bases of 2 1-bbl carbs "brazed" upside down on either end of the stock intake. The 3 carb'd intake looked so cool and so neat a way to bolt the 2 extras on. Owner assured me it ran stronger with single exhaust than same setup with his also-homemade split exhaust manifold. Also said the split manifold helped power a lot, but not as much as the 3 carbs--either one, but not both! Also claimed 3 carbs increased gas mileage, but even by itself, the split m'fold cut mileage! Go figure.

i think i am just going to do a square box where the carb will bolt down then round tube intake runners going down to the intake ports on the head prob powder coat it and call it a day would really like to make it from aluminum if i could get the metal for cheap or free. being as i am doing this on a budget

you are Krazy! unless you are talking about building a racing engine.
Thats a lot of work when the aluminum Offy's are plentiful and proven.
If you proceed, also look at Santucci's book.

Whatever you do, don't forget to run water heat to the manifold floor for street use.

I made one from steel for some motorcycle fuel injection throttle bodies, could work the same for carbs.




I had the flange cut on a plasma table using the stock gasket as a pattern, added coolant piping (the factory manifold had coolant passages). Attached the throttle bodies with silicone tubing but if you wants side/downdrafts you could just put a mounting flange.

Problem I had was the steel was an amazing conductor of heat from the head and heat soaked the throttles on long trips. If I did it again I would use aluminum as the material. otherwise it sounded amazing and the 1/4 turn throttle was just asinine fun hooked up to a pedal, like an on off switch for an angry monster.

Hence the name lol. well i dont plan on building a race engine thats for sure or atleast right now. I have been reading and researching all day and figured it would be a fun side project using my truck as the test mule. I have been putting pencil to paper and drawing up different ideas and setups. Honestly doesnt look really that hard if you have a welder, a way to cut metal and a good imagination. I am going for a rugged homemade look but at the same time not to crude. I did stray for about an hour looking at turbos and what not but decided to focus on the project at hand. i think i am going to attempt a 4 barrel intake first mostly cause i have a 4 barrel carb laying around lol. When i do start to fab stuff up i will take lots of pics and show all you guys how krazy i really am lol

Jodoe what engine is that? It needs two more cylinders....Vernski

I'm guessing its a F*rd 2.3, they made that valve cover for Mazda B2200 pickups.

Close, it's a Mazda fe2 2 liter. The rangermazda 2.3 wasn't till 94. That valve cover is very rare with the Magnum stamping, but at 90hp stock was a bit of a misstated expectation


And vernski, he asked for homemade intakes of any kind. To make it a 6 you would just add two barrels. But I will say that my daily 4 cylinder (not the pictured engine) is 263hp and 280 torque, no extra cylinders needed

The Offy bolts up to the stock exhaust manifold and used the heat chamber box under the carb. The Cliffords I had were without water heating jackets. This truck is an Idaho daily driver and the Offy warms up quickly without a long wait and a minimum of effort with out a choke.

Yes, correct; you only need the water heat if you use headers or Langdons exhaust with the Offy. My comment about water heat is to remind him that he will probably need it on a homeade intake using a single 4 bbl. Now, if he is Krazy and builds something like injector stacks like joedoh did...

and my daily is a production car, a mazda speed 3. its like driving a sledgehammer.
