Hood Pins

I have three pins on my 78 Jimmy that I assume are to hold the back of the hood in place so it doesn't flex. One on the firewall in the center and one on each side behind the hinges. Are these 4x4 only and what muonts to the hood to mate up to them. When my son got into an accident he replaced the hood with one that came off of a 2wd truck. Am I missing something?

Re: Hood Piins

I think there are just slots in the hood that the pins are supposed to catch in an accident, supposed to keep the hood from going through the windshield. I highly doubt the hood is any different between a 2 wheels and 4 wheel.

Re: Hood Piins

There are two holes on the hood I have, one behind each hinge that the pin fit into. Pretty sloppy though. Can't see how that would prevnt the hood from going any place. Still doesn't explain the one in the middle. There is not any kind of hole for the pin to go into.

Re: Hood Piins

That center pin was brought out in 78 and was not specific to 4wd. It was designed to prevent the hood from coming up in the rear on impact. I "think" it was a one year only item.

Re: Hood Piins

Hood must be be pre 78. There is no center hole. Guess I won't put that center bracket back on.

Re: Hood Piins

My 77 does not have it. Guess I need to hope that the two sides will keep my head on me during a front end collision.

Re: Hood Piins

It seems like they designed these hoods so they could buckle and fold up easily in a front end impact, I've seen so many that are bent due to poorly maintained hinges.
