Fireman's hat style cab light question.

Were these style of cab lights offered on the 68 trucks? I'm looking at a 68 4x4 for sale and it has cab lights on the roof that look like this style. The pictures are not clear and there are no close up pics of the roof to see if it has the mounting pads for lights. The owner thought they were original but wasn't sure. He said he would look and get back to me.

I don't recall ever seeing this year of truck with factory cab lights but that doesn't mean anything. Thanks.

Re: Fireman's hat style cab light question.

this prob. isn't going to help since the pics are not clear. If the truck didn't have them factory I don''t think they will set flush on the cab, that's why they had the "pads" built in the roof from the factory, that style light is flat on the bottom and the cab is curved. Coop

Re: Fireman's hat style cab light question.

Thanks for the link. It sounds like the fireman hat style started in 1969 so the ones on this 68 were probably added.

I think the fireman hats started in 70 (maybe mid year?) 69 and some 70s had the hockey puck style.

Re: Fireman's hat style cab light question.

Yeah, the raised pads with round based plastic lenses came out in '69,which were what people now call hockey puck style. Then,in '70 came what people now call fireman's hat style. These light fit just fine on a non-cab light top, just like they do in 73-91s they also came on. The raised pads were to give more room between the roof panels for the mini bulb socket pigtails. I have put them on non-cab light tops before and don't recall what I did. I either crammed and bent the pigtails and didn't worry about it or I think I recall doing something where I siliconed the sockets to the top of the rubber pad rather than up from the bottom,as they are designed to be. I think I also cut the rim/grommet part that sticks down from the pad so I didn't have to drill a huge hole. It was 30 or so years ago. I must have had a decent sized hole to fish the wires, just don't remember. That was before I realized there were raised pads for these lights...but it worked!

Re: Fireman's hat style cab light question.

There is 69 chevy 4x4 also for sale here that has the factory cab lights and they are the fireman hat style and not the hocky puck style. I'm going to have to clarify with the owner of the 68 what style of lights are on his truck as after looking at the pictures again, I'm just not sure what kind they are. The pictures are too blurry. Thanks.

Re: Fireman's hat style cab light question.

They did come out in late-69. But,also, you will mostly see any '69s that had them replaced will have the later design. But,Guide dates all their lenses with first model year of production and fireman's hat style say 69 on them

Re: Fireman's hat style cab light question.

Thanks for the indo. I have some fireman hat style lenses I pulled off of 73-87 generation truck that were made by Signal Stat and they have a "71" date on the top. I also have a brand new Signal Stat #1313 replacement fireman's hat style light that comes with the new style rubber base and it also has the "71" date on the lense.

I have another set of these lights at my house that I will have to check what date they have on the lenses. These were also pulled from a 73-87 generation truck.

Re: Fireman's hat style cab light question.

The OEM supplier was Guide. I guess Signal Stat didn't start making replacement parts until '71. I have an '85 Suburban that has Signal Stats and they also say '71. I noticed although they have the exact same overall shape, there are differences. The Signal Stats have raised webs on both sides of the mounting screws. The rib pattern (diffraction) on the Guides on top run front to back and on the sides they are horizontal and vertical, making a cross hatch pattern. The Signal Stats have ribs that go from the back to the top and make a u-turn to the back again and on the sides they are only vertical all the way around. I know...too much information For further info please refer to the research and development archives

Re: Fireman's hat style cab light question.

That is interesting to know. I didn't realize there was a difference between guide and Signal Stat lights and did not know that guide was the OEM supplier.
