Re: 5 inch drop spring question

You'll be right on your bump stops. You'll want to C-notch the frame. There are kits out there for around $100 and it's not hard to do, but you'll need to pull the box off.

Re: 5 inch drop spring question

I have 5" springs and no notch. If I have the tank full of gas (blazer tank) and hit a good bump I will barely bottom out. I did trim the rubber stops a bit.

Re: 5 inch drop spring question

from what ive seen, and asking blackbeauty, i believe 6in or lower requires a notch, 5 doesnt, but you'll be close, you have to trim your bump stops though. and are you dead set of 5in springs? im probably gonna do a 3/5 on my 70 swb, and shawno had told me to do a 3in drop spring with 2 in drop blocks, just make sure if you were to do it that way to trim you u bolts down from hanging so low, other wise if you were to have a blow out you could risk dragging something. and with doing it that way you will be less likely to have to shim your rearend if i not mistaken. correct me if im wrong guys.

Re: 5 inch drop spring question

I have 5" rear springs with stock bumpstops(untrimmed) They only bottom out on hard bumps. They even do fine with a bed full of car show supplies.

I installed 3/4" bumpstops back in the summer. They still rode fine, but would bottom out on the untrimmed bumpstops more often.

Re: 5 inch drop spring question

Alright already. I stand corrected. You can get by with a 5" rear drop without C-notching the frame, but just barely. I didn't want to put up with any bottoming out, so installed the C-notch kit while I was building my truck. Glad I did, because I later lowered my 68 Stepside an additional 2" with lowering blocks, for a total of 7". It rides amazingly well for a truck that low. One of these days, when I figure out how, I'll post a picture of my truck.

Re: 5 inch drop spring question

Thanks for all the help guys. I just bought this truck a few months back and I am taking it apart and it has torched coils right now and I wanted to replace them and get back to about the same height about 1 inch off the bump stop. I didn't really want to do a c-notch and don't really care about the ride. It's just going to be a weekend ratrod. I have the build under the name I finally got my stepside. Thanks again.

Re: 5 inch drop spring question

These old trucks sit incredibly high in their stock configuration so I, personally, wouldn't hesitate to go with the 5'' drop. Just depends on the look you're after and how little tire clearance you can live with. As I mentioned earlier, my 68 Stepside is down 7" rear and 5" front, but it's licensed and insured in Washington State as a "Collector Vehicle" so I never haul much more than a beer cooler and a couple folding chairs.
