Rare dash cluster?? Guru input needed.
I ran across a cluster today with something I have never seen before...a speedometer with a tripometer. Anyone else ever seen this? I looked it over very carefully, and it looks factory. It works too! I broke the knob off of the stem trying to remove it, but that looks easy to replace. Interesting enough, the tachometer in this cluster is for a 6 cylinder, and I have never run across one of those either.

Re: Rare dash cluster?? Guru input needed.
I want to say those were a repro part by lmc or something simillar from awhile back. Pretty cool find, i don't think they were around long.
Thinking back now, i may be thinking of the extra digit on the odometer and not a trip meter. Some company made something like that. Any chance of a spid?

Re: Rare dash cluster?? Guru input needed.
The mileage reads at 70K, and the condition is consistent with the rest of the gauges...it appears to me to be 40 years old. The rubber grommets used to attach the speedo to the cluster are worn out, cracked, and look like they have never been removed. The speedo needle is faded the same as the others, and although the center is not orange, the shaft of the needle is identical to the others. The hardware is original, and all in all it looks to have never been apart. I am going to pull this apart and see what I can find inside. Thanks for the input Eric! If it is a repro part, it certainly is a good one! The hatch markings are the same as any other factory speedo. The repro speedos/gauges I have seen are very easy to spot in that the hatch markings are slightly different than original.

Re: Rare dash cluster?? Guru input needed.
That's a cool piece and the 6cyl tachs are pretty rare too... I've had over 40 tach dashes now and not a single one was 6cyl.

I have never seen anything like that. Livrat would have the answer.

Show us some more pictures when you get inside. That's a neat piece and to get a 6 cyl tach along with it is a double score!

Re: Rare dash cluster?? Guru input needed.
I think it would be interesting to see inside the cluster, particularly the the speedo. There's a part number stamped into every speedo head. You'll know for sure then. Post some pics if you do.

Re: Rare dash cluster?? Guru input needed.
Well, it is definitely original GM. I pulled the bezel off and the speedo head has numbers stamped into it.
MILES ASSEM. 6457897 is stamped on one side...on the other side, the lettering is super small, and to the best of my ability reads: KILO ASSEY. 6467886 (??) The tach lens reads 6458266 The fuel gauge has BRAKE and TEMP for the warning lights All other gauges (Temp, Oil, Batt) are original, with original part numbers stamped. And the tach is stamped "6 CYL" I appreciate the feedback so far, and am surprised...I was told a far-fetched backstory that is equivalent to the "corvette option" (my BS detector went off ) as noted by Livrat above and was hoping this would get cleared up. I have never seen this before and was guessing the same speedo might have been used in another GM vehicle and was swapped into this cluster??... Here are some pics, and it looks to me it has been there since day 1. The tach NEVER came into the conversation when I bought this...the PO's story was based on the speedometer being "the rarest option" and being told he would most likely never see another one like it.

Re: Rare dash cluster?? Guru input needed.
I have never known of one. It sure appears to be original. I don't know what car would use the same speedo but that would explain it. You just don't see only one of anything original, unless it's some sort of prototype.

Re: Rare dash cluster?? Guru input needed.
Scott,
I went thru every GM book I had and couldn't find anything on a trip odometer set-up, except speed warning option. 6457897 is 67-70, US miles 6457898 is 67-70, kilo The face plate of the speedo would've had a different part number than 6457897, if it's real. The frame is a W series, which overlaps into other applications. IMHO, I think the frame was changed to one that had a trip reset and then using a needle from the same app. This would allow the speed cup and hair spring to be somewhat balanced. The face plate where the hole is for the odometer is distorted a bit, which would indicate a homemade press may have been used. Unless someone has additional info, I thinking it's a really neat set-up that someone made out of GM AC Delco parts years ago. |

Re: Rare dash cluster?? Guru input needed.
I see what you are talking about the upper hole appears to be a little different than the oe stamping. Still this is a really cool piece IMO. I say clean it up, paint the needle and rock it the way it is

Re: Rare dash cluster?? Guru input needed.
Is it possible that this speedo is off a big commercial chevy rig (C-40+) ?
Boy, that there is gonna be one of those good car-show conversation starters.

Re: Rare dash cluster?? Guru input needed.
So what was the truck it was in?
I think dave may be onto something. If it was original i don't think the needle would be designed to hit and stop at 95 mph. (even on a 6 cyl) Very cool find, it would look good next to my mexican cluster...

Re: Rare dash cluster?? Guru input needed.
Tim, the body style change also changed in 73 on the 40-60 series. Also, i have never seen this style dash in a bus. This dash just may be the corvette option...

Re: Rare dash cluster?? Guru input needed.
Does the cut out for the speedo look a little funky? It seems like the factory would have squared off the side so you could read the numbers better. Does it look like a factory cut out up close?
