Coolant in heater/AC question

So I tore down my ventilation system today and there was probably 16 oz of coolant that came out of the vents, not the hoses. Is this a lot?

As far as I know the ventilation hasn't been changed or cleaned in 40 years. The heat/air hasn't worked since I bought the truck about a year ago. I did change the coolant and replace the thermostat shortly after I bought it.

Thoughts?

Also, how difficult is it to switch to R134a from R12?

Re: Coolant in heater/AC question

Yes, my old '73 (heat only) had none until the heater core blew. My '86 is also dry.

Converting I don't know, but when I attempt to repair the system on the '86, I'll have to do the same, so I'll be watching.

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.

So possibly the heater core?

Re: Coolant in heater/AC question

Yes, I'm not sure though if water can leak in anywhere else. Can you smell coolant? Does the AC work now?
I don't want to tell you to change the heater core if it's possibly condensation from the AC. But it will give you something to keep an eye on.
I haven't shopped for one lately, but I think a new HC is 25-30 bucks.

Re: Coolant in heater/AC question

It was the coolant/H2O mixture from the radiator. A/C does not work.

Re: Coolant in heater/AC question

I'm wondering how water's going to get in the vents, especially that much, with a good leak somewhere. Do you notice you have to add coolant very often?

Re: Coolant in heater/AC question

that seems a lot ,for somewhere it shouldn't be
heater core should be only thing in there with coolant
maybe the core connection is spraying back into the houseing?
