Cam Swap
What cams would you suggest on a 5.3? I'm leanning towards the 02 vette ls6 cam and springs. Think I should change out the pushrods also? What cams are yall running? Just trying to figure out which cam I want to go with. Would I have to upgrade the injectors to handle the cam or would stock 02 truck stuff handle the job? Any suggestions?

Re: Cam Swap
you can probably handle the 'vette cam on stock injectors, up from there are they should be a consideration. Your cam choice is going to depend on your goals and what other parts you plan on throwing at it.

Re: Cam Swap
main question is what you going to be doing with the truck.
if you want a rumpy cam then you going to need a Torque Convertor and if you going to tow with the truck then you will have to get a 2800max stall speed. if you do not want to invest in a good TC then 218 is the max intake duration I would use. if you want to get a good TC and have a lumpy sound then get anything thats out there. the 224-228 intake duration cams drive nice and have a good sound. NOTE to get full potential of the cam swap if you go bigger than the 218 size you will have to upgrade the injectors and there is only one style thats plug and play for the MultecII style and thats the marine injectos, otherwise you need to get injectors and then change the connection to either EV1 or EV6 depending on injectors you get. Tuning is going to be key no matter what route you go.

Re: Cam Swap
I know a few guys that run a stock LS1 cam or an LS6 cam and had great results in there 5.3's. You figure a stock LS cam will be a nice mild upgrade, you could almost call it an RV cam from back in the day. Really not alot of lift or duration. So fueling wont be an issue as well as the need to change out the pushrods. LS1tech.com always has these stock cams for sale for about $50.00 which will come with springs.
Here is a 5.3 specs 5.3 LM7 190/191 int/exh @ 0.05" duration 0.466" / 0.457" int/exh lift 114 LSA 2001 LS6 cam 207/217 int/exh @ 0.05" duration 0.525" / 0.525" int/exh lift 116 LSA 2002+ LS6 cam 204/218 int/exh @ 0.05" duration 0.551" / 0.547" int/exh lift 117 LSA 1998 - 2000 Fbody 202/210 int/exh @ 0.05" duration 0.496" / 0.496" int/exh lift 116 LSA

Re: Cam Swap
Should I change out the oil pump, timing set and lifters or just reuse them? Trying to decide if i want to save a few bucks or just go ahead and change them just for the insurance that they are new

Re: Cam Swap
I wint with a lunati voodoo cam part number is 60510, i called them up and this is what they recomended for a daily driver. They do recomend to get a 2500-2800 stall converter to get best results. For sure change out your stock valve springs to ls6 springs. I almost went with a z06 cam because of the price.

Re: Cam Swap
imo chain and oil pump aren't a bad idea, just for peace of mind. Lifters seems to go both ways..some will tell you to upgrade right away, others have run stockers a long time without any problems. There are needle bearing horror stories, but usually from people over running the motor.

Re: Cam Swap
I used a Comp Cams part number 54-455-11 LSR Cathedral Port for 4.8 & 5.3 L engines. I up graded the springs to a Comp Cams Kit part number 26926TS-KIT and also installed new push rods from Comp Cam. part number 7955-16. I talked with Comp Cams and they recommended this cam. I doesn't have a lot of duration but it makes good power in the power band that I was looking for. I also used a LS 6 intake with the factory injectors. Good luck on what you pick to use.

Re: Cam Swap
I you decided to switch intakes do some research on intakes. Some of the articles that I read said that the factory LS 6 intake was a good intake to use for the costs compared to the FAST intakes. Them FAST intakes are nice and work great but they are expensive. Anyway good luck with the rest of your build.
