Here is my new 72 toy, 72 Custom Camper
Rust free western truck.
Cheyenne Super, Custom Camper, 350, 4spd, a/c etc. 80k miles I have to find the correct centers for the rear wheels, a tailgate band and a sport bumper for the rear. Randy is getting me driver quality woodgrain lower trim as it is all eaten up by the sun and some other pieces that I am needing. White wheels had to go! |

Another nice one. How do you find them? Is this one 4x4?

Re: Here is my new 72 toy, 72 Custom Camper
Thanks all.
Joe the wheels are 16.5x8.25 and the tires are 9.50x16.5. Tires for 16.5 are getting hard to find and though I had a set of 9.75 wide rims I wanted to run a hwy type tread and could not find anything other than what I would consider mud tires. Anyway, the truck has a ton of potential and I am planning to enjoy it but knew everyone would want to see the wheel and tire change. It had a king kong back bumper and hitch that I took off and offered on the parts page but never had any interest probably b/c I do not want to ship them. Whatever happens, I just did not like the look and also the hitch wouldnt allow me to install the spare below which I prefer. I think the sport bumper will look nice on it. |

Re: Here is my new 72 toy, 72 Custom Camper
I have a set of polished 16.5x8.25 slots I want to use on something. Firestone makes a highway tread 9.50x16.5 if I wanted then on my 2wd. They look great!

Re: Here is my new 72 toy, 72 Custom Camper
That is what these tires are Joe. Firestone Transforce HT. Look real good on em.
The front wheels on here are Westerns. The rears are RI's (I think). I wish they were all four the same mfg. but I am not trying for an award winning show truck so they are so close it doesent matter except...Gotta find the center caps for the rears and then no one will suspect. What kind are yours? BTW, I am jealous of all those survivor, orig paint trucks! That is better than about anything I know of... |

Re: Here is my new 72 toy, 72 Custom Camper
So,you took the dive platform off the back, huh? It will look great with a sport bumper and those slots. I ran right out and got a set on my '71 Custom Camper when I got it. Back then you could get Dunlop Radial Rover A/Ps.I wish they still made them. They were all seasons with a nice rounded edge. I have a set of 9.75s for my K2500 I'd like to get some rubber on. Tire selection is much better fir 4wds. Does yours have a wood or steel floor? Mine had wood, which was in fantastic shape,so I had a white tonneau cover made for when the camper was off.

Re: Here is my new 72 toy, 72 Custom Camper
That is cool. Tire selection is ltd on hwy types for sure.
Yes I must confess that I was always a stock look guy on these trucks but my love affair with slots goes back to the early 1980's and a 69 GTO that my best friend had with them on it. Man, that car looked so good and I never forgot it. My floor is steel. Good shape on the inside but a few dings. I wish it was wood but this one is in such nice shape I am fine with it. I really like the truck and am looking forward to getting the way I want it. |

Re: Here is my new 72 toy, 72 Custom Camper
looking good. It doesn't look like you have the stowage/tool box on the bed. these trucks are so interesting and had so many different features. Really a cool history lesson on 4 wheels. It seemed like everyone went camping back in the early 70's...not so much these days.

Re: Here is my new 72 toy, 72 Custom Camper
Thanks all!
Scott, you are right no tool and towage box. Oddly enough this is the third custom camper I have owned. Two were bronze with a white top and were built in Janesville about 3 weeks apart. The other was an olive green and white highlander but none had the tool box. You would think the handy camper would have wanted that option. Also no posi... When I think of camping it goes hand in hand with positraction from putting a boat in at a ramp to getting off the road. It does have alot of nice options though. This one is a Cheyenne Super with a 4-spd. I would think that isnt quite the norm. I wonder what the production numbers on it would be??? Probably low. Cant wait for nice weather to take it for some rides and tinker. |

Re: Here is my new 72 toy, 72 Custom Camper
I like the stock trucks, too. But period correct add-ons are downright hip...dig? Something about a C/20 work horse with a dose of extra pride just seems right. Maybe it's because C/10s could be had with narrow whites and wheelcovers, like a nice car,but the same C/20 would have bright hub caps on white wheels at best. I've always like the aluminum slots 10x better as 8-lug 16.5s than 5 or 6-lug 15s. I like C/20s in their own element of style, like wider rear wheels and tires, things like tool & stowage compartments, bigger mirrors,tie-downs,auxiliary tank doors,1/2 moon side steps, etc. Sure a clean unmolested truck is nice, but these were things that were commonly done and for a purpose. Even mounting brackets for camper stabilizers on a Custom Camper don't bother me.You just need to find a camper to use them with!

Re: Here is my new 72 toy, 72 Custom Camper
I agree. Almost like resto-rod's
This one had tie downs that utilized the front bulhead bolt holes so no extra drilling and the rears terminated out under the marker light although 4 small bolt heads are visible on the i/s of the bed for the supporting bracket which is between the inner and outer panels. I actually took em off since I doubt I will be camping with it but shelved them just in case. I am very happy with it and cant wait to do the little extras to make it the way I want it. Replace the trim that is faded out, install spare tire hangar with spare underneath, find and install a sport bumer and get the engine bay all slicked up. Oh yeah, and find the wheel centers for the rears. Gotta have em. This one has 4:10's and I guess that was the std. ratio with a custom camper as no optional ratio is noted on the spid. She's stout! Thats a for sure. |

Re: Here is my new 72 toy, 72 Custom Camper
Joe,
I forgot you ask where I got the tires. A old friend of mine works for a tire wholesaler in St. Louis and he got them for me for about $40.00 a tire cheaper than retail stores. Couldnt pass up the savings! I want to say they were $165 or so per tire. I had a little tire repair shop guy install them on the slots and balance for $10 bucks a tire. |
