Welder/Electircal Question

Sooo... my shop at my house is wired for 220v but it has a dryer plug so im guessing its only good for 30 amps i was told? can i never use a 220v welder?
I just purchased a hobart 190 and it says it does 29amps to 190 amps???
I was really hoping to use a 220v welder as i have 220v plugs everywhere.

Re: Welder/Electircal Question

Check on the current pull of the welder, not the output. I don't remember the draw of my old Lincoln, you should have a spec sheet somewhere.

I do know my air compressor is 15a. (3hp 60gal.)

Re: Welder/Electircal Question

I just went to Hobarts website the 190 draws 230volts @ 20.5 amps so.... does this mean 20.5 max?? or on average??
Im just afraid to plug it in and it not work then i cant return it. It wasn't that cheap.

Re: Welder/Electircal Question

I run my 180 miller off 30 amp outlets with no issues. Just make sure it is a 30 amp breaker servicing the outlet.

Re: Welder/Electircal Question

You'll probably have to either change out welder plug or wall receptacle to work. Dryer outlet are usually 30A. with #10 wires. make sure you have 2 hots and a ground. Welder usually comes with 50A. plug so I change out 30A. dryer for a 50A. welder receptacle. You wouldn't normally have a 50A. plug with #10 wires. In new construction or remodel of shop or garage, you would run #8 wires to receptacle. Code allows use of existing 30A. circuit for welder. If you change out receptacle, just label it. Good luck

You'll be fine. Plug it in and start welding.

Re: Welder/Electircal Question

I've never seen a 220 breaker rated under 30 amps though I'm sure they make them.Almost all other countries use 220 instead of 110-120.

Europe uses 110 but it is at 50hz instead of 60hz and our items will not work over there even though same voltage

Re: Welder/Electircal Question

Yes you can buy a double pole 20 amp breaker. If you decide to weld with only 30 amp wiring to you shop, make sure everything else in the shop is off, except maybe lights.

Re: Welder/Electircal Question

i'd run a new dedicated outlet with the heaviest gauge wire so as to maintain a good supply when you need to use welder run on an extension cord to b closer to your work

Sorry, but that is wrong. Europe is entirely 220v 50hz.

Just to set that straight....

Re: Welder/Electircal Question

I just tied into the dryer breaker and put a welder plug where I was going to put my welder. Works fine.

Wisdom.
This is best.

If you use your dryer outlet, check things out. Make sure it's at least #10AWG copper wire, 30Amp breaker, and everything looks in good shape. And don't run extension cords off it.
If you need extension cords, run larger wire, like #6AWG copper.

Re: Welder/Electircal Question

Ran my Mig Welder off of #6awg copper to a 50amp outlet from a 2 pole 50 amp breaker. Total cost for 15' of wire, outlet, cover(outside), box and conduit since the line is wired outside ran me around $80 at home depot. I should be able to safely run an extension cord if needed.

Check lowes and home depot for discounted end of roll cable, sometimes you just might find what you need for cheap
