283 starter removal problem
I am trying to remove the starter on my 60 chevy, it has a 283 off a 60's impala. But there is a tube/pipe that comes from the top of the engine and it is in the way. Have any of you guys had this problem?

A tube?
Metal? Hose? Is it coming from one of the valve covers? A fuel line? Can you take it loose? Last edited by Woogeroo; 02-25-2012 at 09:56 PM. |

Re: 283 starter removal problem
Some starters have a stamped bracket attached at the front of the starter which bolts to the engine block for support. If that's not what you're dealing with, if the tube is steel about an inch and a quarter in diameter, it could be the road draft tube being out of place. If that’s what it is, it should attach at the top just behind the distributor and intake manifold. It should hang down the passenger side of the engine with a tab that attaches under one of the bellhousing bolts, and the pipe should be aligned behind the starter. If it’s something else we’ll probably need a picture or better description to help.
Here's what a typical road draft tube looks like:

Re: 283 starter removal problem
That describes what the problem is exactly!! I guess the PO must have messed with it and didnt put it back in its place cause it is running right under the starter and I am unable to pull it down. I was debating on bending it straight.

Re: 283 starter removal problem
If you loosen the mounting bolt at the top you may be able to just move it out of the way, unless it's already been bent from previous mishandling.

Re: 283 starter removal problem
So I got the starter taken off and new one installed today. I cant wait to drive my truck soon, a few more parts and itll be on the road. The truck had been sitting for around ten years. The PO was the 2nd owner of the truck and his father was the first. I am very proud to be the third owner of a pretty clean 60 fleetside. Thank you Markeb01 for the info.

Re: 283 starter removal problem
Excellent. I’m glad the forum could help you out. That’s a nice clean truck, and I always enjoy seeing one that still has the jet pod hood. Looking forward to more photos and progress.

Re: 283 starter removal problem
Thanks man!! One piece at a time for me. Moneys tight and with the freaking gas prices rising it makes it hard to save up cash to buy parts. My black chevy is a 1960 and I'm thinking about putting the stock hood back on it. My dad had removed it when it was his years ago cause he didnt like it, I am thinking opposite lol. I think those hoods are bad ass and makes the truck look mean but classy.
