I need A.C. Advice - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a 70 that has all the A.C. components in the cab and firewall. I am missing everything in the engine compartment. I would like to get the A.C. put back together and working. Is there a place out there I can buy all those components together. I am not real savvy on A.C. Systems. I've charged a few and fixed a few leaks. Any suggestions?

Old Air Products should have everything you need other than the brackets.

Have you had personal experience with their products? With what little I read on this forum, guys are not to happy with them.

Since you are starting with a truck that already has AC, I would stick with stock components.

I converted a non-AC truck to a stock style AC truck and would do it again for what these aftermarket companies are asking for their stuff. Plus, what are you going to do when the aftermarket company goes under or switches to a different line and doesn't offer your parts any more?

I took a stock system, adjusted the stock POA to work with R134a, then charged the system with R134a. The reason I converted from R12 is that the cost of the R134a was way cheaper and I can still legally buy R134a. And you can still get it anywhere like Wal*Mart or your local auto parts supply house.

For the underhood stuff I collected parts over a couple of years so I don't know if somebody offers a "kit" with all the components you need.

Thanks for the info. I may have to do that as well. One question what is the POA? I know it may be a stupid question?

I was a member of this Forum for several years. Just can't ever remember my user name and pass word.

I know there has got to be allot of people out there with the similar issue.
I have had about 4 of the trucks with air cabs and nothing in the engine compartment.

What components are you missing?
Is the evaporater case that bolts to the firewall under the hood still there?
If so, you would still need the condenser, dryer, POA valve, hard lines, hoses, compressor, and mounting brackets. If you will PM me with the specific parts you need, I may be able to help you find them.

I bought all new hoses and heater control valve from the Truck Shop because they appeared to be like the originals. Everything came from Old Air Products and fit perfect. I could have had hoses made up in town cheaper but they wouldn't fit in a couple of brackets after they cut the old hoses off and install new hoses. You can buy direct through Old Air Product and save a couple of dollars. I also converted to R134, alot cheaper.

Throw the old a/c as far as possible. Go with Vintage air newest system I have it in my 71. It so much better than the factory one.

What kind of cost did you have in it? Can a guy use his original vents and switch assembly

If not having a stock AC is important...then aftermarket might be the way to go.

POA - Open your hood and put your nose next to the passenger side hood hinge. Look straight ahead. The POA is the bulbous looking deal that comes off the hard line coming out of the outside heater box. You need to adjust this to work with R134a if that is what you want to use for a coolant chemical.

I did a pretty detailed post about the procedure a while back. There is a link to an AC forum that tells you how to adjust the POA. Unfortuantely the picture with the instructions disappeared recently. The process is still there.
