Smile You wouldn't believe what I found while cruising

So me and my friend were driving in Tacoma wa and were on the way to get me a 373 ratio ten bolt when we passed by a random speed shop we decided on the way back it would be worth going in and seeing some old school drag cars that were showing in the windows. Well a biscayne in the corner cought my eye as it had a big block So I walked over to see and it it looked a little different than a reg big block too it said mark two 427 620 hp I though to myself " huh arent big blocks mark IV and "w" engines?" then the thought hit me like a hammer to the head Mk II MYSTERY MOTOR. I looked down the side and sure enough it says mystery motor on the side of the car. So I walked overly to one of the old timers doubtfull and thinking " must be a clone engine" and asked is that thing for real? And he looked at me surprised saying "kid how do you know about that thing?" I just asked again is it real? He told me all about it a lot of which I knew and a lot I didn't the car has original factory aluminum stamped Paneling hood and bumpers (proposed 63 z/33 drag package) I found out later they have another mkII at a private shop, wouldn't tell me where (don't blame him) but the fact is after today. I always thought that this was an engine I would never see in person in my lifetime, just in magazines. I'm both humbled and astonished to see the forefather of the big block as we know it and even some ford engines ( Chevy forced to sell two to ford to prove they were production motors) I have picture but can't upload from iPhone but here Is an article on the car and engine
http://www.superchevy.com/features/p...427/index.html
I'm 21 and even I know about the importance of this mkII

That's too cool. My first car was a 62 impala ss with a 283, always wanted a 409 and never new about this engine.

Re: You wouldn't believe what I found while cruising

Not exactly started the big block but became an instant legend on the track and have way to the "porcupine" canted valve big block head that had better flow at higher rpm for racing. Though the mystery motor is two bolt main it has the priority mains oiling which was a first. Basicly it was made to test ideas in eventually making the " ultimate engine" it was supposed to be made into production but shortly after its debut gm stopped its racing program. The mk4 396 came out and then the 427 based on the Mk2 design but slightly smaller bore and bigger stroke

Re: You wouldn't believe what I found while cruising

The 348, 409, 427 evolved into the 396, 427, 454 etc. Very cool piece of history for sure. Insidious sounds about right. I've never seen a horsepower sticker that high from the factory but who knows.
