one for the engine guys ! 327 question
I just recently picked up a 1964 Chevy 327 bottom end from a buddy that had it in his truck for a bit. He took the engine out because the heads were having issues with leaking oil into the combustion chamber. long story short , the heads came off it and it ended up under his work bench gathering dust because he lost interest in building it up again. so I bought it for 200 bucks and have so far clean it up and made sure everything is fine on it. only problem was a broken motor mount bolt that I have yet to get out and am hoping is not a big deal to get it out. I have a list of questions/concerns about this engine though.
The engine has been bored 40 over with sealed power flat tops and is hopefully going into my 86 c 10 questions: -Will vortec heads perform well on it -What should I be expecting for compression with vortecs on it -what should i get for fuel millage with vortec heads, mild cam, edelbrock rpm intake, holly 650 carb, headers , th350 tranny and stock rear end - what should i be expecting for power with the build that i have listed above thanks for anymones time in giving me a little info . this is my first build so im trying to get as much help as possible |

Re: one for the engine guys ! 327 question
Compression should be between 9.5:1 to 10:1.these heads will wrk very well with this engine, use a good dual plane intake, keep the carb around 650cfm.cam should be around 480 lift ,comp 270 works very well in this engine .should make between 350 -400.make sure you curve the distributor to be all in at 2500 rpms.keep the timing at 34-36 total advance.you'll want at least a 3:42gear but a3:73would be best.the cam will "feel "bigger in the 327.so don't over cam it.oh yah it'll work better with a 2500-2800 stall converter. The mileage will probably be around 17 if you can keep your foot out you might hit 20.

Re: one for the engine guys ! 327 question
The Vortec heads will be a good choice IMO. If the engine has flat top pistons, your compression should be around 9 to 9.5-1. As for a cam, I would go with one in the 262*-268* advertised duration range.

2nd that, you will be around 9.25- 9.5(depending on the deck cut). I also agree with the camshaft selection dont go too big on the cam or carb on that short stroke mill.....you will pay for it in loss of low end tork, & mileage....crazyL
