Re: Need vent windows restored

I had just done mine the other day. Not too hard, but if you get the ones from LMC make sure you order 2 of the seals or you will only be half done. The book says you only need one, I had only about 6" left after doing one. (I assume that you are talking about the seal that holds the vent window into the metal that is.)

Its a pretty easy job, I would reccomend the set from GMC pauls on line and the install kit is an extra $12.95, makes it much eaiser. I have not had the best luck with some of the LMC door seals

Read these...they may offer some help. There's a link from mbgmike who sells the kits to rebuilding in the second thread.

Re: Need vent windows restored

I rebuilt the vent windows on my ‘71 and it was not all that hard. Drilled out the old rivets, cleaned up the rust and the frame with black rust encapsulater, and then wrestled the new seal into place. The only tough part is the rivets. I bought the rivet kit (sold by many vendors). The only tricky part was making a counter to the rivet punch. I took a short piece of steel rod and rounded the end with a drill bit. This was used to hold the head of the rivet while I drove home the punch. No need to put them in backwards (as other threads suggest) with this method. Once it was all put together, a little metal polish on the chrome and white grease on the springs and done. Here are a couple of picks.

Feel free to PM any questions as you move forward.

Hope it helps, Rou

Re: Need vent windows restored

My to-do list is still so long I don't think it would be good to add to it. This really is not very hard, just takes a few hours. Good luck.

Re: Need vent windows restored

Rou, hows the final fitment of the seal...I mean does it look like it's gonna be water tight? and is your vent window opening & closing OK?

Cheers for the pics mate.

Re: Need vent windows restored

They are still on the shelf waiting for the build to catch up, so I can't say for sure on their seal, but they close nice and tight and work well. Pretty sure I got them from Borthers.
