When did GM stop using TBI?

What year did GM stop using TBI? I found a '96 454/4L80E combo for sale and I can't really tell, but from the pics, it looks to be TBI. I was under the impression TBI ended in '95.

Re: When did GM stop using TBI?

GM ended TBI FI in '95. A throttle body was used in 96+, but FI is down with a spider underneath the upper intake.

In US 95 was the last model year for TBI in trucks and vans. Although, there were a handful of vortec based TBI vans sold as fleet vehicles for a short time during 96 model year. TBI was also used in industrial and marine applications.

1996 was a switchover year - OBDI was no longer acceptable to EPA and OBD-II was mandatory. TBI could not master requirements and vortec port EFI was the solution. The 454 Vortec TB may appear similar to TBI. Ask for better photos!

Re: When did GM stop using TBI?

The difference in appearance between TBI and the L29 port injection intake on a 454 are night and day. Throttle body is on the passenger side and points roughly toward the front corner of the hood. A TBI engine will have an intake that looks like a conventional carbed type. You could have a holdover of some sort.

Re: When did GM stop using TBI?

1996 454 is SFI (assuming that's the engine that came in it originally).

Re: When did GM stop using TBI?

That's a TBI engine, I think he's probably a year off on his model. Should be a 4L80E tranny, though.

Re: When did GM stop using TBI?

the truck in the pic isnt a 96, look on the fire wall and you can see where the fuses were at on the early style of that body style. that truck should have a big fuse block on the driver side fender to be a 96 or newer truck.

Re: When did GM stop using TBI?

Air cleaner assembly looks like BBC TBI.
The 7427 PCM has transmission anti abuse code to minimize transmission abuse. As long as fluids were changed regularly it should be in good shape.
Make sure to unbolt fuse panel, crab ALDL connector and VSSB module if you go with it.. Disconnect engine bay harness from bulkhead connector under brake booster. Fish EFI harness from inside cab out into engine bay. Do not forget the PCM!

Re: When did GM stop using TBI?

Definately TBI with that air cleaner. SPFI uses an all plastic housing.

This is SPFI

Re: When did GM stop using TBI?

Thanks BadAction.
Where did you get the intake setup?
One cool thing about this intake is that it's a natural for forced induction!!!
