71 chevy with booster and this big ugly check valve looking thing that comes right off the booster then goes to the rear of the carb. Is that necessary to have>

What have you guys done to pretty that up? I was going to just run a nice SS line from booster to carb, but that things is in the way.. Thoughts?

Here is a picture. Its that black ball thing coming off the booster. Is that needed or can i ditch that?

The check valve is connected to the booster the other part is the filter It helps protect the rubber diaphragm in the booster. I would keep it

try repositioning it to sort of hide it from eyesight so you ferget about it

I could locate it RIGHT off the back of the carb. Air filter would hide it.

What would it be filtering though, the carb SUCKS through that, it doesnt blow through it.

I'm not saying you should remove it, but this is the 1st time I've seen one on that line. Since you already have it there might as well try to hide it...but if were mine and I couldn't hide it, I'd wouldn't think twice about ditching it...

I've never seen one of these on any original GM 67-72 truck. I have seen them on later GM trucks and cars. I can't recall the years they were used, but perhaps from the mid-70s until sometime later. I think the 1st one I saw may have been on our 76 Olds Cutlass.

mine doesn't have one only seen them on the later models, i thought it was there to hold the vacuum to allow a boosted stop if the engine stalled/quit.

Good call, i pulled it off the 81 chevy truck where i took the engine out of.

If you don't like the way it looks then take it off. As said before it is not needed, 67-72 trucks never came from the factory with them anyway. I've always seen them on smog era cars and trucks from the mid-70's and on. I'm not even sure what "they" are called, but i'm sure it is some sort of filter or check valve. Joseph

I always thought it was there to hold vacuum in the booster to guarantee a power-assisted pedal at all times. I would keep it.

That being said, I have a few Honda check valves off mid 90's Accords and Civics, they use the same size booster line, the valve is about 3/4" long and slightly larger than the OD of the line. I'm going to try one out on my C10 once its running.

Ditch the filter but keep the check valve. You could make it look better by using a stainless hose.

x2 i'm going to bend up some 3/8 steel line for mine in the future i've used steel line for other vaccuum hoses looks great.
