lug nut numbers

Hey guys. First time user. I have just acquired a 61 1/2 ton custom cab with a 305D. I know most half tons use 5 lug nuts, and 3/4 and up use 8, but mine has 6 lug nuts. Was that another difference between Chevy and GMC, or is there such a thing as a "heavy half" back in '61? If so, what exactly sets the heavy half off from the regular half ton?

Re: lug nut numbers

Welcome to you sir from eastern Arkansas. You will find a wealth of knowledge and entertainment on here. The General[GM used 6 lugs on there trucks as far back as almost ever I think. They used the 6 lug setup until 1971 in the half ton truck when they went to the popular 5 lug araingment. They kept the 5 lugs until the last body style [the one starting with 1999model year] Now the exception is the k trucks or 4x4 as most know them , they had 6 lugs. The nexet to last body style[88-98] had 6 lugs in the light duty 3/4 ton trucks [7200GVW] but for the most part the 5 lugs were used on the 1/2 tons from 71 until 98[I guess I should have said that first.] Not all posters on here will be as long winded or cunfusing as I so I hope I don't run you off befroe you get a chace to check out everything. Good luck with your truck

Re: lug nut numbers

Thank you for your response! My Dad had a 60 Chevy, but I was very young and thought it was 5 lugs. Someone mentioned mine had 6 like it was odd, so I thought this would be the place to ask!

The "heavy half" was a promo type thing back in the late 70's with a little heavier spring pack basicly like a light duty 3/4 ton. I remember seeing the late 70's all of the trucks with bedside banners saying heavy half.

Hey, nice truck!!

To add pics to a thread, click "Post Reply" or if you're typing in the little "Post Quick Reply" Box at the bottom of the page, click "Go Advanced" - then once on that entry page, click on the paper clip symbol and a dialog box will pop up for you to add 5 pics at a time (per post).

Hope that helps.

Re: lug nut numbers

Welcome to the forum. The main differences between Chevy and GMC in 1961 were the hood, tailgate, dashboard, emblems, and engine selection. Also the rear axle in the GMC ½ ton was normally a Dana 44. Deluxe exterior window and side trim was also different than Chevy. Looking forward to the photos.
