454 vs 350 in my truck - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey All,
I have a 1970 Chevy pickup that I'm in the process of putting disk brakes in. I'm also putting the whole drive train from a 1985 Chevy Suburban into the truck. The Sub has a rebuilt 350 small block. I also have a rebuilt 454 in a 1982 Chev CrewCab 4x4 that I am thinking about parting out. I have a post on the 73-87 board about this. Hmmm...which engine should I use if I part out the crewcab???
The 350? The 454??

Decisions decisions.
Opinions? (there should not be a lack of THAT on this board!) LOL

Oh yeah...the 454 is going to be hooked up to a 700R4 tranny. Any problems with that combination?

Hmm whats happening with the front diff and whatever tranny and transfer case combo from the 82? I'm looking for a front diff from a 1 ton. Rod

Hi Rod,
The one ton has a 3/4 ton differential up front. It is not the correct one for the truck.

You sure... does it have a 60 or a 44 or something else cast into the webbing at the lower right corner of the diff pumpkin housing facing forward. Rod

It's like p$n*s envy - everybody wants a bigger one. That being said - which engine is stronger? How much money do you want to spend? I'd love a blown big block, but it isn't in my budget. Good luck, Scott

Oh yeah, the tranny question.... Depends on how you drive, but that 700R4 won't take too much abuse. Better with a 400. Have you been watching the Copperhead project on "Trucks"? They beefed up a 400 and added an overdrive unit to take the power from the new 572. I suppose ther are a lot of 454/700R4 combinations on the road though.
