Underside of hood color
I'm getting real close. I picked up my barbell, front, rear bumper and the louver cowl from the painter this evening. I dropped off the hood in the swap. Although the top ide will be white, I need to be sure what is the correcct factory color pattern is for the underside of the hood. I don;t want to make the painter do it twice.
I've seen pictures with thE hood the entire top color, (Athur Throckmorton's red truck) and I've been pictures with the underside all semi-gloss black, So I'm unsure as to what would be correct for a two-tone paint job. Give me your thoughts (as Spock would say)

Re: Underside of hood color
I've always seen the underside of the hood the same as the body color. The only things under the hood that aren't body color are the inner fenders and the core support...those are black.

Re: Underside of hood color
Huh? I thought all of them were black. My two untouched Fremont built trucks are semi-gloss black.

Re: Underside of hood color
You guys want to throw some pictures up. O Arthurs trucks the underside was red but the hood braces were black. I'm pretty sure he did it correct as possible.

Re: Underside of hood color
Strange. Can't seem to find a single pic showing the whole underside on either truck. I did take some hinge shots for another member, and I have some pre-purchase before clean-up pics that show a little of the hood and the level of gloss if that helps. Both trucks are untouched under the hood, save for some wrong clamps, hoses, rad cap, etc. on the V8. I really gotta fix that.

Re: Underside of hood color
The four Chevy trucks I've owned or worked on were satin black. Maybe GMC's were different?

Re: Underside of hood color
The black makes the most sense, I ain't too crazy for white under the hood. I would think it will be fun to keep clean.

Re: Underside of hood color
Mine is a 1960 GMC and was built at the Oakland GMC plant. Best I can tell the bottom of the original hood did not appear to be black. From old photos and videotapes it seems to be more of a thin medium gray (perhaps primer) with yellow overspray around the edges. The original body color was Lunar Yellow. I don’t have much to offer in the way of photos:
And here’s the best shot I have. It’s a photograph of a 20 year old videotape the last day the engine was run before it was pulled out:

Re: Underside of hood color
most of them I've seen were black w/overspray, except a few real early GMC's that were body color.

Re: Underside of hood color
I know it's not logical(Spock) or even correct, but how about that nice Blue you have on the truck! Better than white and different or outta this world...or am I in the wrong quadrant? I must be Pon Farr-ing....

Re: Underside of hood color
The original hood for my '60 was Satin Black underneath with some major body color over spray. The replacement hood I got for it is also black underneath, but appears to have been repainted.
My '60 is about as early as they come. Serial Number is 1047. According to Jolly's website that makes it #46 built in Pontiac. So, who knows what the crazy assembly line people were up to back then. LOL |

Re: Underside of hood color
I'm going to go with black to be more uniform - what the hell.

Re: Underside of hood color
I'll chime in on this, I went out behind the shop to look at the 64 c60 that I had given to me a little while ago. It was my brother in laws on his farm, and had been since new. The underhood color is black a lower gloss black in fact. There is blue overspray on most of the hood. I know in my body shop if overspray had gotten on a panel that was'nt to have it I would have a job to do

Re: Underside of hood color
same as the body will be . Yes I added two extra braces from a donor hood. These hoods flew a ton and getting them razor straight and flat can be trying with the hood bouncing around. That little trick was easy and worked like a charm, the donor hood cost me 20 bucks

Re: Underside of hood color
I agree, the only hoods I 've ever seen that are body color underneath are '60 and '61 GMC's.Photo from May 1960 Motor Life.
