Engine Size

So I am rebuilding a 68 C10 LWB stepside. It has some Pontiac motor in it that was running with my TH350. I would love to get a chevy engine for it and have been on craigslist daily. I know a 350 will fit. How about a 327?
Any online info on engine sizes would be helpful. While I can turn a wrench, I don't know nuthin bout them engines

Re: Engine Size

Any small block Chevy will work.
Though your current motor mounts are probably set up to run that tin indian, so you will have to get the small block engine towers from salvage or here on the parts for sale section.

i have seen these trucks with pontiac and caddy motors in them. would never do it. but yes as stated if you but chevy v8 mounts, you can fit big or small block in it. LS motors have different mounts so wont work unless you get the special mounts for them. but even vortec engines from the 90s will fit. id put a big block and a 4spd in the floor in yours. thats the idea for my next project. bigblock and manual tranny

Re: Engine Size

When I was 16, I had an 80 model Firebird with a destroked 400SB. (350 rods and crank, decked, .0030+) 3:08 single traction rear. .. but .. I swear, if that car had wings it would fly. It would pull hard for as long as you held it.

I think the 3:08 was dad's way to keep me under control.

Idea - If this is going to be for your son, you might take a look at the GM Performance parts 350 / 290hp crate engine. For about $1800 you can get one shipped to your door. Yes, it's a crate motor but you'd know it's good in the bottom end. aluminum intake, HEI, headers, 650 or so Holley and you're good for 325hp easy. They run something like a 222 (?) cam in it, 4 bolt mains, etc. It's a pretty strong old motor. It would be tough to build it for that same $$.

Just a thought.

Re: Engine Size

I have been looking around the web for a crate motor. Since I am such a rookie, it would be nice to get something that I know just works. Then when he leaves for college and doesn't take his truck...

I will give that a look, thanks!

Re: Engine Size

They have a 260hp version too, a little cheaper. I think maybe the cam is a little different. I had a 290hp in a 69 Camaro and it sounds pretty good too. The cam actually has a little lope to it.

Re: Engine Size

Make sure the tranny bell housing is compatible to the chevy. Some B.O.P ( buick, olds, pontiac ) trannys had the chevrolet bolt pattern but most didn't.

Re: Engine Size

Good catch double, forgot about trans. If you worried about the hp, get him that 260hp, you can always swap heads intake carb later for more power. Get him a small thumper cam, itll make it sound bad a, with basically the same power up as a small rv cam. That way it lopes hard at idle.

Re: Engine Size

I like the pontiacs! (also called ponchos)

What size is it? They are torque monsters.
