Help decoding a '83 motor?
Hey guys -
I am looking to grab a motor for my '49 Chevy. I found a 292 from a yard and wanted to ensure it is. I have check the motor mounts (staggered), however other than that I am not too sure what else makes it different from the rest of the block (except the size). I just wanted to see if I can get some more info on it before purchasing it. The number I was sent was MO411PTA. Thanks for the help. JM |

Quote:
M= GM Mexico assembly plant 04=month of assembly (April) 11=day of assembly PTA=would equal the year and model the engine was going to be installed in. I can not find the code "PTA" The 292 engine was only used in the GM and Chevy trucks. Last edited by terryj; 03-08-2012 at 01:04 PM. |

Re: Help decoding a '83 motor?
Thank you Terryj.
That is probably the number. The code "PTA" - I have been told this is a replacement motor. Would that be the reason? I really appreciate the response. Thanks. |

Re: Help decoding a '83 motor?
I really don't know about the PTA suffix, typically the engine build date preceed the vehicle only by a few days. GM moved there 292 manufacturing plant to Mexico in 1980, so if you were told that it came out of a 1983 GM truck this would make sense. The suffix code (PTA) would tell you what type of vehicle, type of transmission and the HP of the engine this engine was built for. If the outfit your getting the engine from has the VIN number of the vehicle it came out of then you could cross reference the two numbers.
