65 230 / 3 speed questions

Definitely want to upgrade the '65 LWB I'm picking up this weekend to power disc brakes and power steering, as it's going to be my son's DD in about a year or so. Also would like to look at dropping the 3 on the tree and going to a 200R4 / 700R4 tranny swap keeping the 230 6 cyl.

I've been pouring over the search feature here lately, and I'm finding some answers here and there.

Was thinking of trying to find a 73+ truck with a 250 6 cyl and just rob the entire setup.

- Front suspension
- Power Disc brakes
- Power steering / linkage
- Column
- Brackets / accessory mounts to add PS pump to the 230

Anyone done this?

Looks like it might be easier to find pieces and parts than score a complete 6 cyl truck. Seems everybody trashed the 6 to swap in a 350.

Re: 65 230 / 3 speed questions

Welcome. Im still running the original nonrebuilt 230 in my 63 and I love it. Although I have a nicely built 427BBC going in sometime this year. The 230/250/292 power steering pumps brackets can be tricky to fine, but they are out there. You might consider swapping the whole front cross member. What kinda gears are you running or planning on running in the rearend, tire size and how will the truck be used (mostly highway or around town). Im not sure on the compatability of the front crossmember from a 73 and up, but someone will chime in. How about a couple of pics?

Re: 65 230 / 3 speed questions

Another option since it will be a DD and gas is not going down[it seems] you might want to consider a T-5 swap to gain overdrive. You can do a search on here for that there are tons of post about it. I have gathered all the parts to do that swap in my 70 swb with tha 327 and 3OTT. I have both the s-10 and Camaro 5 speeds and a van tilt that has had the bowl shaved to look like a factory floor shift tilt column. The overdrive will help on gas cost and be different . A6 wa 5speed will be cool

Did you ever find a 250 with a 700r4?, Did you come up with another solution?
