Need help with loud ticking noise - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Just got home from work today, and on the way home i start hearing a real loud tapping noise coming from the engine. I pulled the dipstick and saw that the oil is about a half quart low...I just filled er up today...it usually takes about a month to go through that much. I really havent checked much else because it dark and almost 12:30am....So my question is...What happens whenver you blow a head gasket or burn a valve...what are the "symptoms"

thanks for the help...and I really hope this doesnt turn out to be major

My guess would be either a collapsed lifter, a broken rocker arm, or a blown exhaust manifold gasket......the all give a pretty good tick.

I would agree...either bad lifter or rocker.

Symptoms of a blown headgasket include water in the oil, oil in the water. Check the oil, it will look like a thick chocolate milk shake. A rough running engine, as in running on 6 or 7 cylinders. Bubbles in the coolant when running.
All are possable, some times you'll only get one of those symptoms.
Burning a valve...
Intake valve would cause rough running, one dead cylinder above idle. I MAY idle smoth. Back fireing through the carb when ever you touch the throttle.
Exhaust valve...pretty much the same as intake except it'll pop out the tail pipe.

3 cheap things to check -
Tighten up the exhaust manifolds.
Make sure the fan blades are clearing the shroud.
Look at the spark plug wires and dist. cap. Maybe look under the hood at night with the engine running.
Maybe you just left your watch under the hood.

Could be a rabbit with a loud thumper.....no help I know.
