Summer of 69
Weather is warming up purchased several trucks before we decided on this one for the restoration. My son will be 15 at the end of July. This is his truck. Lots of pictures now just showing the rust free straight body components. First task is to remove much of the engine compartment, rebuild the motor, convert to power disc brakes, rebuild front suspension to stock and replace wheel bearings and brake components. Remove bed. Jack up cab clean and paint frame. Paint underside of cab and bed. Replace cab using new bushings. We plan a color change. I will paint the firewall, front of bed and back of cab along with interior and door jambs. I will hire someone to paint the exterior.

Wow thats a solid canvas! I an nicely equipped truck.. Hard to find with all them options and no holes. But looks like you grabbed it from texas so explains alot! Are you keep original color? (I am a little fond towards it)

Wow-Up here in Ontario, that would be near mint condition already
Surprised you got such a nice truck where you are. They use salt there in CT don't they? Very few 67-72 on the roads here. Some out west where it's colder but drier. We get such wet, icy winters and the salt spray is a cancer causing agent for all old vehicles. Best of luck.

OOPs. That figures. I guess that's the best way to get something for the North East.

Re: Summer of 69
Painted the Chassis the other day. We purchased a HF Media Blaster and blasted all the frame components after removing all the grime by first using engine cleaner, then scraping with putty knife/wire brush followed by another dose of engine cleaner, then finished up with stale gas and scotchbrite. I think that the media blaster worked pretty darn good on the clean frame. When I got to areas that were stubborn to clean it was because there was grime still attached to the metal. The front suspension crossmember and transmission crossmember had sludge that I felt would not get cleaned to my satisfaction without removal so we took those off.
We put on 2 coats of Epoxy Primer followed by 2 coats of Satin Acrylic Urethane Enamel. Sprayed it with our new Devilbiss HVLP. I think the best thing we have done so far was to buy that new spray gun. Lots of curves, nooks and crannies on the frame and I put laid the material on wet. I was amazed that there were no runs. Boy it looks picture perfect close up. I don't think that would have been possible with the old siphon feed gun. Last edited by RestoreAmerica; 04-21-2012 at 05:20 AM. |

Re: Summer of 69
Thanks. Wind was gusting like 40mph or more today. I guess I positioned those garages in the right direction cause I was able to paint with the front door open and no breeze inside. The wind sucked the fumes and spray out and kept the area very pleasant to work in. Beautiful day for painting no bugs and perfect temp in the garage. I only have a couple of used portable garages that I bought used. The last rain storm everything got soaked in both garages. Decided to put a cheap tarp inside the fabric garage and just held it up with rope and one wire cable going down the center. The theory is that now if it rains the water that gets past the outer cover will follow the cheap tarp down to the ground.

Re: Summer of 69
Craiglist. Bought 1 of them for $75. The other for $125. Go to your local Craiglist and put in portable garage maybe you will find something suitable. Zoning in my city forbids these garages so I would not want to spend too much on one. I figure I will be able to sell and get my money back when I am done with it.
