Question about indicator lights. Maybe - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm trying to sort out the wiring in my 81 Chevy. There are some after market fog lights mounted on the push bar, and I traced the wires back to a switch, which went into another switch, which then went to a fused power, and the other wire went to an orange indicator light under the dash. One of the wires from the orange indicator light runs up to the red indicator light in between the speedo and the gas gauge. What is the red light for in the dash?

I can probably post pictures if anyone needs them. I just want to get rid of the orange indicator light under the dash, i'm just not sure why it ties into the red indicator light between the speedo and gas gauge, or what that red indicator light is for.

Thanks motornut. That's the red indicator light i was talking about. The orange indicator light is tied into that one. So you're saying that the red one between the speedo and gas gauge isn't factory?

It could be,that the fog lights were replacements for a set of those fog/driving lights that had one side clear,and one side amber.They often used 2 switches,instead of a 3-position toggle,and 2 different color indicator lights to tell the operator WHICH set was on.

That could be since these lights look a little newer than the rest of the stuff I've found on the truck. I'm just going to rip out the wiring for the lights, toggle switches and indicator lights and just rewire the fog lights to a single switch. I swear that whole system, and the trailer brake controller are all held together with wire nuts.

I've realised that in the world of aftermarket automotive accessories, "proffessional" installers believe that's how it's supposed to be. I just had an alarm system put in and they did the whole thing like that. Absolutely ridiculous. My trailer brake controller is the same way, as well. And mine is a 2002 Silverado!

It's amazing how many wiring "magicians" there are who can throw anything together with just wire nuts.

I'm thinking about just ripping out the whole trailer brake controller. Does anybody think it's even worth it to keep it? This truck is just going to be my daily driver
