1976 Chevy 3/4 ton...no title?

Due to NOT GETTING any help from the previous owner with transferable title, what are my options if I would like to register a rust free 1976 Chevy 3/4 ton pick up...thoughts and ideas please?

Do you have a "Bill of Sale" from the previous owner? Why wouldn't the P/O sign over the title? If he has lost the title you can go to the DMV and file for a lost title, if he has the title in hand and doesn't want to sign it over, then why did he sell it in the first place? Are you sure he was the owner of the vehicle as listed on the title, if he never had the title tranfered when he bought the vehicle this could be a real problem.
In New York when you buy or sell a vehicle, you will usually use a Form MV-50 (Retail Certificate of Sale) to signify the change of ownership for dealer transactions, or for private transactions you'll sign over the Certificate of Title (MV-999) on the back. In either case it is always good to get a "Bill of Sale" this will hold up in any court to release liability of the P/O of any damages that could occure while the title is being transfered.

I guess i've never been in that situation but I think you would have to have the previous owner file for a lost title either way. Or actually you might be able to file for a lost title.

I don't know much about NY DMV, but here in Oregon the buyer can file for a lost title, however, the P/O will have to sign the lost title request, the title will come back in the P/O name. Then you can have the P/O sign the title and then submit for a title. It's a long process and can be costly depending on the cost of title change.

Thanks for all the ideas...NOT GETTING any help is not entirely correct. ( I am not looking to name names yet) I bought it from a dealer out of state who tells me he'll have a title for it soon...it's been about 2 1/2 weeks since i took delivery and I am getting nervous.

Does the state where you bought it from require titles?

State of Maine would NOT issue a title for my '73. Just sent a letter saying that they didn't require one on a vehicle xx years old. Bill of sale and that letter got me a SC title.

NY issues a title for anything newer than 1974...

Call the Consumer Protection Agency,if the title isn't to you,within 30days.Most states allow that length of time to get a new title...sometimes longer,if it's an out-of-state title.
In Michigan,they give you a copy of the Application for title transfer,to prove ownership,and you can get a temporary paper window tag.If the dealer doesn't get you the title within the 30 days,they can face prosecution.

Worse case http://www.broadwaytitle.com/ should be able to get you a title but they charge for it.

Saw there you got it from an out of state dealer and assumed it wasn't the state you were located in.

like jhngardner367 posted, call CPA and maybe throw dmv on the list, they can advise you on a course of action. Hopefully you can easily get this resolved.

The dealer followed through and got a transferable title for the truck which I received a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks for all the advise, I was getting very nervous having payed in full for a truck I could do nothing with. Lesson learned...

I know you got resolution, but in Tennessee you can get an "artisans lien" or sometime called a mechanics lien and get a title that way. Basically it gets advertised in the paper, do a title search to be sure it isn't stolen and notify any lien holders on the title, then there is an advertised auction. After that you take the paperwork to the DMV and you get a clean green (that is a good thing) title for a small fee. Another way is to register it in a non-title state if you have a friend who lives in one of them. Some states only go back so far like say 20 years on having to have a title, after that a bill of sale is all you get. Georgia is that way. Alabama and Tennessee are not. They will be sure it isn't stolen or has liens on it.
