Rearend advice?

Nice title right...I have a 71 c10 weekend cruiser no dragstrip with what I assume is a stock rear end (open diff) with 3.08 gears? I am going to swap the sbc for a bbc and I don't know what to do with the rear end will it hold up and do I need/want to go with a posi or limited slip or any other options?..Any advice or suggestions...Thanks

Re: Rearend advice?

I have a 3:08 posi behind my big block and it's fine, alot better MPG than my old 3:73. Keep it, you'll like it.

Re: Rearend advice?

What type of transmission you planning to run? Do you have a stall, or plan to use a stall? How much cam in the ole Rat motor? All that would play a part in the rear end gear in my opinion.

You looking for out of the hole power, or more gas mileage / occasional freeway use?

I have a 408ci BB, pretty lumpy Lunati cam and 3000 stall in a TH400. I am thinking 3:55 maybe ? .. we'll see. I have never driven mine so, it could go either way. I'm planning to put mine somewhere in the middle.

Re: Rearend advice?

Depends on what kind of a bbc you are planning on running. Traction is what breaks stuff, pegleg rear doesn't offer much of that.

Re: Rearend advice?

That is a pretty big motor for a cruiser. You can get that out of a 454 without much effort.

You won't get real far real fast in a 496 with a pegleg. That motor could probably eat a 10-bolt's lunch pretty quickly.

A 500 hp vehicle is more than a weekend "CRUISER".
