Assembling the gas pedal
Ok guys, I know this is ridiculous but I cannot figure out how to put the gas pedal onto the rod. It previously had the incorrect setup so I ordered a new pedal, pin, and spring. For the life of me I can't seem to figure out how the spring needs to be positioned so that it applies tension to the pedal.
Any and all help would be appreciated. Pictures would be great! Thanks, Jon Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Assembling the gas pedal
We either need pictures of what you're working with or a more info like year and engine, whether it's stock or has been modified. Also, are you referring to the springs on the carb throttle linkage?

Re: Assembling the gas pedal
I'm talking about the actual black pedal inside the cab of a 1971. Trying to figure out how to correctly mount the gas pedal to the rod that pulls on the linkage. The pedal uses a pin and a spring that holds it together and doesn't allow the actual pedal from flopping around when your foot isn't on it.

Re: Assembling the gas pedal
Picture of 72 but I dont know about any spring. As far as I know the carb spring tension holds it up. I was wrong once before though......

Re: Assembling the gas pedal
Thanks guys. There is a spring behind the plastic pedal to keep it up. It also keeps the pin from backing out. When I get home tonight I can take a picture of what I'm talking about.

Re: Assembling the gas pedal
I'll try to get a picture posted, but this is the explanation. Viewing the pedal from the back side, i have the pin sliding in the left side of the pedal, with the long, straight, non angled part of the spring running vertically. The part of the spring with the hooked end, slides behind the pedal bar, or the front side, between the plastic pedal and the bar. Hope that helps.

Re: Assembling the gas pedal
Leftybass, thank you for the pictures, that is exactly what I needed. The reason I had so much difficulty is that the hooked side of the spring is bent towards the coils of the spring rather than yours being bent away from the spring coils.
So when I set it up to hook around the rod the spring has to go on the other side and the spring doesn't "lock" into the indention on the pin. I'm afraid if I tried to bend the spring it would just get brittle and snap. Here is a pic of how I would need to set mine up: THoughts? Thanks JonFrank |

Re: Assembling the gas pedal
Yes, you can go to the junkyard and find any 71-87 chevy truck or van. They all had the same hardware, just different pedals. I got my hardware from an early 80's van. It was exactly the same as what was on the other 71 cab I picked up.

Re: Assembling the gas pedal
Where did find your replacement pedal?
My 72 has just the rod coming down, which works for now as a gas pedal. But the rectangular flat part isn't there and I don't have it... |

Re: Assembling the gas pedal
Most vans 73 to the early 80's used the same plastic pedal as the 71-72 trucks. You can get it in any junkyard or pick them up at one of the numerous aftermarket parts retailers.

Re: Assembling the gas pedal
I converted my 70 to that style pedal. I like it better than the old style which always falls off when it gets worn.

Re: Assembling the gas pedal
I know this is an old thread but help comes in handy no matter when you get it.
I have been looking at my new pedal pad and trying to figure out how to have tension on the spring on my 72 c10 gas peddle assembly, which I didn't pay attention to when I removed the old one, and now I see how it goes Its so simple when you finally see it so thanks again NSF |
