A Couple 4X4 Questions?

I'm working on a friends 1972 K10 we are installing a crate ramjet 350 using the stock mounts/crossmembers. Are the 4wd engine mounts taller than 2wd? The oil pan is laying on the crossmember and the mounts look as they are being pulled apart.

Next is we are using a 700r4 with the modified output using the stock pedestal and transfer, anyone run this set up? I'd like to get a idea where the shifter comes through the floor.

Thanks any help is much appreciated.

Re: A Couple 4X4 Questions?

Dont know if this helps, but stock 2wd motor mounts are the exact same as 4wd motor mounts. I have about a 1/2 space between my oil pan and the crossmember, using a stock pan.

Re: A Couple 4X4 Questions?

Hello there, I'm sure on the exact size, but I do know off the top of my head I have enough clearance between the oil pan and cross member for a 3/8 battery cable to go thru it, I was rerouting my cables so they don't get pinched between the two. Not sure on ur tranny question as my set up is still original. Good luck*

For the 700r4, if you are using the Advanced Adapters output shaft, and mating it to the stock adapter, the way to go is to move the engine crossmember forward and leave the t-case and adapter where the General put them. Stock 4x4 engines sit further back leaving room for such a move with the engine.

I haven't done this yet myself but others on the board here have. Maybe they can chime in.

Re: A Couple 4X4 Questions?

^^ x2. My friend with a '67 Panel on a 4wd Suburban frame moved his motor forward for his 350/700r4/NP205 set-up. No driveshaft work necessary. Maybe the pan that came on the Ram Jet is a bit different.

Re: A Couple 4X4 Questions?

mrein and Special-K are spot on - from the great folks on this site I learned that the stock 4wd v8 location is slightly aft of where it would be in a 2wd chassis, so you will have the room to move it fwd (I was considering the exact same mod and asked some of these questions a little bit ago) - seems to me it was about 2" that it needed to be moved. Bottom line - mount the trans to the tcase, then see where the engine falls and put your mounts there.
