What do you think? Buy, or keep looking?

Ive been looking for a work/hauling truck for a while now to move my smaller trucks, friends boat, the cars my brothers blow up every few months, etc. Ive kinda been wanting a square body crew cab dually with a 6.5. I asked around at work and one of the other mechanics said he had a 77 crew cab 3/4 ton camper special 454/turbo 400 2wd truck that he traded for a few years ago and doesnt use. The good, it has 56,000 miles on it, the heads were rebuilt approx 3,000miles ago, runs good, suspension looks and feels good, tires are 50%(just flat), glass is all good, good hood, grille, lights, and bumpers. The bad, it needs rockers the whole way down on both sides(how do you do that on a crew? I cant find panels.) all 4 doors have rust holes by the rockers, needs both fenders, needs a bed(im ok with that so I can delete the camper hooks), it needs the usual stuff on the inside cleaned, seat covers or seats from a newer truck, little dash fixing and such. I can get doors, bed, and fenders for cheap around here. Ill probably fix the body and paint it black maybe add some markers and put it to work. He said he would sell it for $700, should I get it or keep looking?? Sorry the pics arent great I didnt take them.

Re: What do you think? Buy, or keep looking?

Looks like a decent deal to me. Not sure on finding panels for a crew, but I have never looked either. I bet it would make a great puller for what you are looking for. PM sent to ya, BTW.

Re: What do you think? Buy, or keep looking?

im sure you could make the patch panels for the rockers out of the ones for a standard cab.. dont look too bad from the pics.. but id try to get it at a little above scrap price maybe $500

Re: What do you think? Buy, or keep looking?

When you look at it does it scream "buy me!"?
Lots of work and $, the little stuff adds up quick. Don't forget, you have to look at it while your working on it. It's do-able, how much effort do you want to put into it?

Personally, I'd look at it, but the pics don't "do-it" for me. Does seem like a decent deal though, and sounds like it fits your needs.

Re: What do you think? Buy, or keep looking?

Here scrap is sky high. Current vehicle price at USA Metal in Joplin is $240 a ton. That truck is about 5000lbs right? So, 2.5 tons x $240= $600. So, $700 is right above scrap.

The camper top looks like a blazer top? You may be able to get a couple bucks out of it if you sold it or something

Re: What do you think? Buy, or keep looking?

So, does anyone have any pointer on making the interior nicer? Ill probably put seats from a 99-07 in it and redo the carpet and headliner. Any Ideas on the dash, stereo, covering the doors?

Re: What do you think? Buy, or keep looking?

I like the white and green, I think it would be a shame to not keep it but thats just my opinion

Looks like a fun project. I have only seen one crew cab for cheaper then that here but its not like it was in any better shape so 700 is decent

Re: What do you think? Buy, or keep looking?

Well green is one of my least favorite colors, and I've never been a two tone fan either. I might keep the two tone if the green was blue or red. I was just gunna shoot it one color to make it faster and easier.

Do you have the paint codes for that? I love the green, might do mine that color!

Re: What do you think? Buy, or keep looking?

@motornut LMC has crew cab rockers for that truck and the only thing left green when I replace the doors fenders and bed, will be the cab and hood
@Your41Plague12 I dont have the code, but u could search 77 paint codes and probably find it
@Eyegore I cant swing the drive and that much cash at once, and Im not in a huge hurry to get it and get it finished, it runs and drives now too so I can run it while I fix it up. Plus, its more of a every two weeks or once a month when I need it truck. The yellow one is nice though, it gives me hope of how nice this truck could be. Is it 4x4 it looks taller?
@INSIDIOUS '86 Keep looking for what? I have a small salvage yard as it is lol

As for the green if it was this nice, I'd run with it. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=4465553

Re: What do you think? Buy, or keep looking?

Sometimes cheap doesn't turn out that way. Add up all the stuff you need to do plus the 700 and see where your at. Then put a value on your time. There are a few of those around my area(not far from you) in the 2-2500 range that don't have near the rust that one does. I would bet you could buy a nicer truck for the same money you'll have in that one and save yourself a bunch of time. JMO

Re: What do you think? Buy, or keep looking?

well my time is valuable, but I like having a project too. I can park it at my dealership behind my stalls and roll it in nights and weekends when Im not in class. I can weld pretty good and paint a little bit (i have friends in the body shop for helping with alignments airbag lights on collision repair) so fixing the body is not a huge deal. Plus parts for those trucks are everywhere here I could pick up all for 4 doors for $100-200, fenders are cheap, and I may have a friend that will give me a bed. And, yes tulsa not far at all from me I was there last night actually, I went to school at OSU in Okmulgee so I know the area somewhat. I might check out tulsa Craigslist, do you know of any trucks for sale??
