Oil Filter Adapter - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I've read several threads but nothing really helped much. I have a 283 that I need the spin on oil filter adapter(s). I already got the Mr. Gasket round piece that fits into the recess, is there something else I'm missing like the by pass valve adapter?

anyone have a picture? Thanks.

I also have a 283 and have an adapter.the parts as far as know of are
The gasket that fits between the block and bypass
The bypass and the spin on adapter, also the two bolts that are used to secure it.
The only thing I'm not sure of is what's used to seal the adapter to the block. I think it's a round rubber seal like what's used on the original canister oil filter housing. I got my engine back in parts so I never saw it put together.

This is the one that I used on my big block, but it will also fit an early small block. I think you can order a similar one from Summit. Hope this helps.

thats what i used on my 305 i didn't use a gasket and have had no issuses

Ok,
going to bring back this old thread. the 283 in my 66 has this adapter (was leaking) and I also snapped a pic of what the block looks like.

There is a hole in the block picture about 1 o clock. And the plastic black piece is pretty hard, should it be rubber and more plyable?

I was using a K&N oil filter which seems to seal well against the face of the adapter.

Am I missing some other piece?

If I were to replace this assembly, what should I use?

i don't see the gasket that seals the adapter to the block
the gasket would be the same gasket that seals the old canister to the ring in the block
your adapter does not have a bypass, i wouldn't worry about it unless you go 8000 miles between oil changes

Ok, let me run through a few things just to make sure I understand the information I'm getting and reading.

I can use this piece

This is the proper stock bypass that would work with it which I can either use, or not use...

Other side of bypass valve.

and this will allow me to use standard chevy filters (which don't have bypass valves in them)...

OR

I can use this part that and go with a ford type filter.

If all this is correct, then great, however, what is this piece and is it an option? Better / worse? It appears that using this would require that the oil filter seal up against the oil filter boss on the actual block itself, not like the previously listed adapters.

I'm sure I'm overthinking this but I want to do this once, do it right and have it not leak!

But your block looks different than a modern SBC. I'm not sure the filter would seal with a later adapter

The filter won't seal to the early block with the late adapter.

You will need the conversion adapter. The most common one uses a Ford filter.

Right as rain you guys!

I just tried to 'match up' the new oil filter (K&N hp3002) and it WILL NOT seal against the block so that later model bypass valve adapter in my last pic will not work.

LDO, This is the adapter I have for my motor. It is a small journal 327. I have had the motor for about 20 years. As OGRE said, if you dont run the oil for a long time you should be fine. Im no filter expert, but the filter has an internal bypass. The adapter i have is one you show in one of the pics posted.

Thanks Bubba, yes that helps. I was getting hung up with so many different options. The kit you are running seems like a reliable and inexpensive solution.

late answer on my part but that style of adapter absolutely has to have the stock bypass valve used with it or you end up cracking the adapter when you tighten the bolts down along with distorting the adapter and causing oil leaks. I've been there and done just that not knowing that I needed to retain the stock bypass valve.

I have read that as well. The part that I removed was installed without the bypass (second) part and looks a little bent and had been leaking.

I ordered the perma-cool 1134 adapter from summit this morning along with a backup set of gaskets.

That should work ok. I'd use one of their suggested filters though or a the Wix or Napa filter that crosses from the HP-4.

I see that Perma Cool sells a replacement gasket and O-ring for that setup if you need them.

Good move, I just got mine ('58 283) to stop leaking. It took 3 tries with 3 new rubber gaskets. I even tried glueing a gasket onto the adapter,still leaked a little. The last try I just got it in there straight and tightened the bolts evenly till it was tight. Crossed my fingers and started the engine, no leaks! I'm so glad to move on to other things now. Good luck

Thanks. Geeze, I hope I don't go thru that! I haven't started up the motor yet since I've got other things going on but I sure hope I've got this thing centered and the gaskets installed correctly.

If this fails, I'm going with the stock bypass and mr gasket type adapter.

You are correct, I'm ready to move on to other things besides oil leaks!

Got the girl running today and zero leaks!!!
Took a while to get her back on the road bit i did alot of needed maintenance on her.
I replaced...
the fuel pump, summit
All fuel lines, fittings and connections with russel pro flow stuff.
Valve cover gaskets, edelbrock extra thick
Oilpan, stock from summit
Oilpan gaskets, felpro one piece
Dip stick, lokar
Inner dip stick tube, GM
Cap & rotor, Accel
Plugs, Accel shorties
Plug wires, MSD
Oil filter adapter, perma cool
Oil, Castrol 20w50
Oil filter, K&N
And cleaned & painted everything needing cleaning and painting.

Took her out on a test ride, no leaks, no fires and nothing fell off so things are looking pretty good for now...

This place is like a room full of older, more experienced brothers that i can come to for help.

Congrats on getting back on the road. Checked out the 66, the torque thrust and the flat black look great. Hoping to have my 54 in flat black someday.

Glad to hear you got that leak fixed. I was able to get a few more things done on my truck as well. Pedals,Clutch linkage,shift linkage, and turn signal/ steering wheel have all been put back on. I almost want to test drive it like it is ( cab only,no doors,fenders,or hood) lol

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
