Transmission question?
Okay....I thought I knew this already....but what transmissions were offered for a factory 1991 K2500 Suburban w/ a 350 engine? I thought only the 4L80-E was offered.....did the TH400 come in them as well? If a 1991 3/4 4x4 has a 16 bolt auto pan....does that mean it was swapped in at some point??? Just trying to narrow down some info on a possible purchase...Thanks in advance!
Pat

Re: Transmission question?
Here ya go:
![]() This is the powertrain chart from the GM Heritage Center archive, for a '91 V3500 Suburban. This is the chart we used to release the various driveline configurations for production. Based on this, it was an automatic overdrive (4l80E), not a TH400. Here's the rest of the information, for all the other options and content, if you are interested. http://www.gmheritagecenter.com/gm-h...t-Suburban.pdf K

Re: Transmission question?
V3500 Suburban?
Did GM actually make a 1-ton 'burb; I have seen people claim to have a 1-ton but thought they were incorrect (to put it nicely)? Also, looking at the PDF you linked to, on page 8, it says the 1/2 ton burb had 210hp/300tq and the 3/4 ton burb had 190hp/300tq; is that correct, it doesn't seem to make sence? Also II, it lists the 2 diesel engines as 260tq and 285tq; I thought the diesls were supposed to have more tq??? Quote:

Re: Transmission question?
RPO code MXO encompasses all 4 Speed OD transmissions. If it is a 4L80E, it will also have RPO code MT1.
700R4s are 16 bolt pans... Good luck with that one.

Regarding hp ratings - yes. Typically the "heavy duty" engines are built for durability rather than overall power. Regarding diesel torque - yes - in general, diesels have more torque than a comparable gas engine, all other things being equal. In this case - not all other things were being equal... ![]() K

Re: Transmission question?
as a general rule of thumb, for most later GM 2500 wilth overdrive, 6 lug wheels 700R4, 8 lug wheels 4L80E. I say most because every now and then they did something different

But not factory. Suburbans were only built at Flint and a dually would not fit through their assembly line process. K

Re: Transmission question?
Forget counting bolts, the 4L80E is very easy to identify - there's a waffle pattern cast into the bellhousing on both sides.
I'd love to find one of these with a blown engine, need a mountain truck to haul the family... |

Re: Transmission question?
The dually suburban was an aftermarket kit i believe as my dad bought one and told me about it much like.... his 76 vette with an opening back lid just an aftermarket thing companies made and i saw an ad in an old 4wd magazine someone posted on here, you might of been able to purchase it through a dealer and have them install it that's possible because dealers back then probably did more than the money hungry ones now where if you touch one thing warranties are being voided lol but anyways not just home made someone threw on some fenders and a different axle I know It was a kit type deal ill look for the ad
