Door alignment

I am starting to put my doors on and I am having a problem getting the fit right. Th rear door when fully closed is not aligning up with the body. It is sunk in more. It looks like the striker is set in too far. I moved it out all the way but no luck. What am I doing wrong to get the proper body line?

Re: Door alignment

Is the front lined up with the fender? I have noticed on some vehicles if you have the front hinge too far out it sinks the back in, normally I see this with two door cars (long doors) but it may be worth a shot checking.

Re: Door alignment

Make sure you have your door rubber bumpers on. 2 little rubber pcs that cushion the door from hitting the jamb. You can somtimes close the too far in the striker. Should only be like 2 clicks to close.

Also, you don't need to have the fender on to check the fit of the door, just make sure that the bottom is flush with the rocker, and the front of the door is flush with the windshield post.

Re: Door alignment

You also have the striker adjustment if you are off on that side as well as the 2 rubber stoppers.

Re: Door alignment

Does anybody have a pic of the bump stops? Mine is missing and need to know where they go. The bottom rear looks like it is bent a little it is lined up in the front. I closed the door and at two clicks the body lines are ok except the slight bend in the bottom door.

Re: Door alignment

Here are some pics, sorry the light is bad. I still think the lower right is bent out a little. Any suggestions?

Barnfind...
The '60 thru '63 are different than the '64 - '66....as they use the wedge & slot along with the striker plate....At least I think I'm correct on the year break...
I'll take a pic of the bump-stop's that go along with the early cab/door alignment system and post em up for you.

Okay....I just checked...
There are no bump-stops on the early design....just the wedge.

Give me a few more minutes, stealth.,...I'll get em up.

Re: Door alignment

Thanks for all the input. Is it the big wedge under the strike plate? I have the door adjusted good except for the door is going in too far at the rear. I have adjusted the striker all the way out. When I do the two clicks the door looks good but it is not seated all the way. I want to get this fixed so I can put my fenders on. Any suggestions or pics?

No problem....

Get down and check out that wedge....you can loosen it and use a dead-blow hammer to thump it outward about 1/4 inch....snug it up and see how you like it.
You can adjust it in all directions.
Someone on here....I think it's Markeb, has the shop manual insert with the step by step instructions on door adjustment.

Maybe we'll get lucky and it will just "appear" in a little while........

Re: Door alignment

I moved the wedge and it lines up good. I think the striker or latch is worn. It closes on the two clicks but still doesn't stay lined up. It moves around. Other than that it looks good. I sanded it and sprayed 1st coat of primer. Here is some pics. If you notice you can see the gap is bigger in the rear of the door. I also have the front fender and extender mocked up.

Keep in mind, Barnfind....If it moves around at the back side (latch end)... that would indicate excessive clearance, meaning you can move the wedge further out. (untill your door is flush with the cab)....the wedge is the "in" adjustment and the latch is the "out" adjustment, if that makes any sense.
If you have any modeling clay or silly putty, you can stick some in the slot and then put a little celophane over it, shut the door.....open it.....and that will give you an idea how far and which way you're going with the wedge.

Re: Door alignment

A tip for posting pics;
there should be a choice in photobucket for posting in forums.
I just changed your links by adding img in place of url.

Re: Door alignment

I've learned that drilling line up holes through the hinge mounts helps immensly when putting the doors back on. Holes no larger than 1/8 inch and lining up with a nail.

Glad you have your doors lined up.

Re: Door alignment

I thought of that before I did it. But as you can see I didn't. I will the next time I do it. Thanks for changing my pics. I switched to photo bucket and did't know how to do it.
