Tranny or Heads?

As like most of us, we have to complete our trucks in stages. My question to you is would your next purchase be a 700R4 or a set of Vortech heads?

well with the heads you'll also have to purchace a new manifold and would also seem like a good time for carb upgrade and how good are your pistons and rings?? i'd go with a tranny upgrade first then with an engine rebuild, IMO it just doesn't make sence to put new heads on a tired engine

The trans is what i would do first, and as a bonus you will improve mpg and saving more money for the other stuff.

I tried to do the tranny first...but some other maintenance I did while the truck was down (oil in the water) indicated my heads wouldn't wait, so I did the 700R4 and Vortecs at the same time. (The old heads would've been $500 to fix.)

Finish the engine then go onto the trans. I just have a flex plate and cap and wires and my engine is done. next it will be a street and strip built 700r4. then the diff. Measnwhile my body work is being done

As stated above, how is your motor? If it is still pretty low mileage, by all means, get the heads. But if your motor is tired, i wouldn't mess with it. If it has alot of miles, upgrade to the tranny, and then plan for a rebuilt motor with the Vortecs, and whatever cam, intake, and compression you want to run.

Last summer i was faced with a similiar dillema. I had a TH350 that i wanted to replace with a 700R4, and a fresh 350 with stock heads. The TH350 later went out before i could buy one of another, so i had it replaced with a rebuilt one b/c it cost 1/2 as much as a 700R4. This weekend i am picking up a set of heads for the truck, and should have them on this June .
