Really cold drive to work this morning.

The temp this morning was 2*F so I started the truck up with my trusty remote start to let the burb warm up before leaving for work. Go out about 15 min later and leave for work (maybe 8 mile drive if that)
2 miles from home, my heater's putting out cold air.... Hmmm... I look at the temp gauge and it's reading 240*
Middle of traffic and I have 14 stop lights to go through before I reach work (GM Dealership) Usually I can catch these lights all green or just turning yellow when I hit the intersection so I figure ok it's real cold out, and I'm travelling along at a fairly good pace so let's hope I can make the lights.... WRONG!!!! EVERY SINGLE LIGHT IS RED!!!
Now the longer I'm driving/sitting at a light the higher my engine temp is getting...245*...250*...255*... Finally get to work and get the burb checked into the service dept. punch in and get to work at the back parts counter. Couple hous later the tech comes up and informs me that the heater pipes goig back to the rear auxillary heater have rusted thru and my rad cap was weak. Down to 11psi from the indicated 16psi.
So I looked up the heater lines and YUP THEY ARE DISCONTINUED WITH NO STOCKING DEALERS ANYWHERE!!!

So for now I had them install a reducer/coupler in the hoses under the hood that lead back to the rear heater (3/4" hose to 5/8" hose) to bypass the rear heater, refilled the radiator and replaced the cap. They then did a pressure test on the system and thankfully it held pressure just fine with no indications of coolant leaks into the oil or cylinders. All I can say is the ONLY thing that saved my burb from a catastrophic event was the REALLY LOW outside temp helped keep the engine just cool enough to reach work.

So now I gotta find something to make the hard lines out of to run back to the rear heater. Sounds like a summer project to me. Maybe if I can find some 5/8 and 3/4" o.d. copper pipe. We'll see.....

If you wanna go this way..... and not sure how much shipping would be on top of the already high price, but LMC carries the lines now.

I've repaired those before by running rubber lines all the way back.

Something to consider, rather than re-creating the hard lines.

Thought about that as well... And I do have a enough 5/8" silicone heater hose here. Would only have to get some 3/4" hose and something to use for shielding to keep it from chaffing & protect them from road debris. Perhaps large diameter split wire loom? Hmmmmm something to consider.....

My Suburban which was done by a conversion company had rubber heater lines run to the the rear. They were held up by the rubber encased metal straps. Like these:


Now, I can't say for sure that they were the originals....they were definitely quite old, but didn't leak a drop. Being that I live in Las Vegas, I removed the lines completely.

some places make custom lines....had to get some done for a lowered van a while back

Well with 129" of snowfall so far this winter and no garage, I'm gonna wait until end of May-early June to get this puppy back up and running right.

I helped a friend with his. We used Copper tube, as he had access to a "stockpile" of it. He ran an HVAC company. It worked great.

Damn that sucks what a long rough ride to work. I would have been stressing and speeding haha! That sucks big time glad to hear that the motor didn't overheat though

i have rear air, but i'm pretty sure mine doesn't have rear heat. was that an option? was there just a heat exchanger in that rear air unit?

Count your hoses at the back
Yes there were units with both up top(my88 from Texas)
But mostly heat was on the floor here

i gotcha. i've got rear air only. i'll bet these burbans get awful cold in the winter, and rear heat sure does seem like a good idea! i'm still working on mine, haven't got to drive it yet!

Yup they sure get cold,and it helps to clear the back window

YEah it was a BRRRRRRRR_BBBBBBBIIIIN that morning LOL By the time I got to work, my hands wer in my sleeves(Gloves were way in the back) and I was exhaling inside my coat to keep warm!!

She's parked for the duration now until I can get a few minor things for it like..
1. Cat Convertor
2. Steering linkage
3. Shocks & ball joints.
4. Rear brakes
5. Tires
