Brush & Roller Paint Job?

Funds are tight so I've been pondering the idea of using a painters roller and brush to paint my truck! I know, never in a million years would I consider something like that but I came across a site that makes it look possible! What do you think?

Check it out!

Re: Brush & Roller Paint Job?

i have heard of this and even seen a guy rattle can and get this close. I havent done it but i think anything is possible if you ve got the time to sand and buff. But i got to think it is a lot of sanding.

Re: Brush & Roller Paint Job?

i didn't sleep at a holiday inn last night
but i did roll and brush my truck last year when some others were
it was suggested at the time to thin it out, quite a bit
this was my 4-5 th time rolling a paint job
aside from somebody keyed the drivers door,it still looks great
I used gloss tremclad
starts about here
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=421767&page=7
and Kikkegek did his as well but he thinned it and it looks much smoother

Re: Brush & Roller Paint Job?

I have seen cars with Rustoleum (or Tremclad) roller jobs that looked okay, but what happens if you decide to paint it for real later?

The solvents in most primer / sealers will wrinkle or lift uncatalyzed enamel.

Re: Brush & Roller Paint Job?

I did my truck this way last fall. Rolled on Rustoleum unthinned, because I wasn't really looking for it to self-level that much, my bodywork was already pretty rusty and rough. I sanded the really rusty spots, brushed on some rust converter, then a coat or rustoleum primer, then the paint direct out of the can. The finish has a small amount of 'texture' as I just left it as the roller, didn't try to smooth it after with the foam brush as some have done.

My truck is rusting away, and it's not going to survive long enough that I will ever be painting it with proper automotive paint. But this way I was able to hide a fair amount of the rust from view, and hopefully buy enough time until it will need to be retired.

I have some pics linked in the "Brown Trucks" thread of the end result. It has held up nicely agains the Minnesota winter, although this year that wasn't as sever as normal. But I really do want to hit it with some car poilsh or wax or something, didn't get a chance to do that last fall before the cold hit.

I was disappointed only in the actual color, on the can it looked to be a much better match for my original dark brown. it ended up MUCH lighter once it dried. But I really only wanted to get the truck to match color-wise, as I had fenders in primer, a door from a red truck, and a nasty tailgate from the salvage yard, it looked like a real mutt.

Re: Brush & Roller Paint Job?

May I suggest rattle can? I have gotten away with many a rattle can jobs. In fact, the roof of my pickup in the photos below is rattle canned. Two cans of home depot paint for $16 total, I think.

If the Rustoleum has cared you usually don't run in to that problem

Re: Brush & Roller Paint Job?

i did this on a hood to see what all the fuss was about. yes if you ever want to put automotive paint you'll have to strip it all off. prep work is the key as it is with any paint job. and yes there's quite a bit of sanding involved. here's a couple of pictures of my rolled on paint job.
